An ostomy is anything with "ostomy" on the end of it. A tracheostomy
is an ostomy of the trachea (the windpipe). Ostomy just means that it
is an opening from some part of the body. COLostomy means that the
opening comes from the colon (or large intestine). A colostomy is
built when part of the large intestine is removed or needs to rest for
a time. ILEostomy means that the opening comes from the part of the
small intestine called the ileum. In this case, all of the large
intestine have been removed (or most of it, as some still have a rectal
stump because the anal opening has not been closed. There are also
jejunostomy's (part of the small intestine called the jejunum).
Hope that clears some things up for you.
