PATAM was created in response to the unacceptable situation where the greatest number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the world today are located on the African continent but do not have sufficient access to lifesaving medications. It is estimated that of the 42 million people living with HIV/Aids worldwide, 29.4 million are in Africa and more specifically, the Sub-Saharan region. Of these, only 23% have access to treatment. The impact that HIV/AIDS has on this region of the world is paramount. The epidemic has already negatively affected the economic growth and development of the past decades, which in turn, affects the countries' ability to fight the disease.
