Hey Kim,
Sounds like you're doing the best you can. It took me a real
emergency at the house to make me leave. My guy lives his life in
such chaos. Last year, he put an addition on his house without
obtaining any permits. As a result, he ended up getting in trouble
with the city where we lived. The addition was a sunroom that was
built over the porch where the gas meter was. He hired illegal
immigrants to do the job. They botched it completely, and they left
the gas meter in the room. My guy never told the city that the meter
was still inside. He claimed he was going to send in the meter
reading himself online every month and told me this was okay...i.e.,
he was going to lie about it. Well..as fate would have it, the gas
company came by one day to check the meter, and found it was inside
the house...which it turned out was very dangerous because the meter
had a leak. It was very old. They took the meter, and turned off the
heat and hot water. This was in November. It was cold! Instead of
taking us to a hotel and/or renting a house somewhere else, he
convinced his boys (my stepsons) to stay, saying they were going
to "rough" it, and basically told me I'd have to leave if I wanted
heat or hot water (!). I left and stayed at a hotel (which I had to
pay for). This lasted a few days. He decided he wanted heat and hot
water after all, so he decided to do it "his way!" He got space
heaters to heat the house, and it became a real fire hazard, since
the electricity in his house is really old and badly wired. That
freaked me out and also disrupted my work. The lights would go off
constantly, and my computer would lose things I was working on! It
was a nightmare. Then his way of remedying the hot water situation
was the last straw. He asked the same illegal immigrant who screwed
up the sunroom to hook up an illegal propane gas tank to the hot
water tank, which almost exploded (!). I demanded that he get rid of
the propane gas tank one night when the smell was very strong. I knew
something was wrong. I threatened to call the cops on him. I was
worried for my safety, as well as his boys'. He finally listened to
me (probably only because of the boys), and got rid of the propane
gas tank. Apparently, it completely ruined the hot water tank, and it
was about to blow. It was horrible, and dangerous. What utter
chaos. I couldn't live in that chaos anymore. But it took ALL THAT
for me to leave, so don't feel bad! When it's time, believe me,
you'll know!
