Did you know that in today's fast paced society we are subject to more than
physical clutter that sits on our desks and that takes up room on our counters
and floors? There are many forms of clutter besides Physical Clutter. There are
also such things as Brain Clutter, Heart Clutter and Noise Clutter.
What is Physical Clutter?
Physical Clutter is usually made up of items for which we have not had the time
to find enclosed storage. Physical Clutter can exhaust us without our being
consciously aware that we are being stressed by it. Often clients tell me that
their clutter does not bother them. They know where everything is! This may be
true but their eyes are always taking in the mess that surrounds them. The brain
is now assimilating the information sent to it by the eyes and our brain is
subconsciously telling us that we are out of control, tired and overwhelmed. No
wonder we go to the doctor with vague symptoms of feeling fatigued much of the
time.
What is Brain Clutter?
Often by not writing things down and trying to remember everything, our brains
are constantly searching for information we've stored. If we do not write down
our To Do's, grocery lists, directions, dates, etc, we overtax our memory. We
find ourselves asking "Did I do that?", "What time was the doctor's
appointment?", "Was I supposed to turn right or left at the intersection?". This
can be very exhausting for our poor brains. Multitasking is another big consumer
of brain power. When we are interrupted during deep thought, it takes 20 minutes
to get to the same level of concentration before the interruption. The average
executive is interrupted 8 times an hour!
What is Heart Clutter?
Often we keep pent up anger, hurt feeling and unfulfilled dreams stored in our
hearts. By not forgiving someone or being overly patient, we often feel like
doormats. By not fulfilling a dream we become resentful and can mistreat others.
Our hearts are, at times, full of emotional clutter.
What is Noise Clutter?
Do you live with someone who always has the TV or radio on? Are there small
children constantly chattering (or screaming) around you? Does your friend
endlessly drone on about nothing important? Do you work in an environment that
is noisy and have no control over it? These are all forms of Noise Clutter.
Conclusion:
By being aware of our surroundings we could eliminate much of the stress that
comes from our environment.
Physical Clutter needs to be stored out of sight.
Brain Clutter can be controlled by writing things down.
Heart Clutter is often cured by having a sincere and loving conversation with
the person who has hurt us.
Noise Clutter can be solved by making a conscious decision to turn off the TV
and spending more quality time reading to our children.
Let's start today by making some of these conscious choices for a more rewarding
and less stressful life.
