Hello All -- I have an 88 year old female client who was given Lisinopril after being diagnosed with a leaky valve and anemia. This was done in the hospital after she had been admitted for shortness of breath and hemoglobin being down 50%. She had already been in the hospital for 4 or 5 days and was improving when this particular medication was administered. She took one dose and suffered severe allergic reactions including, but not limited to, extreme swelling of the tongue and difficulty breathing. She was then admitted to intensive care for 5 days. She is now complaining that she still has shortness of breath and is having difficulty walking without a cane or walker (previously did not need either). Furthermore, at the time that the medication was administered, she was a borderline diabetic. She is now diabetic.
Did the doctor fall below the standard of care by giving her this medication under the above-described circumstances? My sense is that the answer is "no" but I would like to hear your opinions regarding the administration of Lisinopril and, of course, your opinions regarding the drug itself.
Thank you!
