Dear Nordine,
How would your suggestion sound, if you had replaced
the swearing by saying... for example.... TATATATATA?
I mean when you want to swear, you just say TATATATA
instead!!!
I guess the entire text would be:
"TATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATAT\
ATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATAT"
Not everything, but some things could be done with
smile!
Sorry!
Good attempt otherwise

BAPS are hoping

As such, any suggestions as to how it can be improved
(no swearing

these are sensible suggestion Richard. BAPS is obviously short of space and I
think this reflects pressure on trainees to present at meeting. Often high
quality clinical research is overlooked, and too often there are lots of basic
science presentations from the 'academic' institutions. Whilst these are of very
high quality, it has hard to believe that everyone is as interested in molecular
biology as me. Having a trainees session would probably not reduce on the
numbers of papers submitted as I suspect research fellows put in most of the
papers anyway, perhaps a move to clinical-based sessions would improve
accessiblity to trainees not involved in basic science research. Getting papers
accepted certainly appears to be getting more difficult, and this probably
reflects our increasing numbers (a double-edged sword), hopefully people won't
be discouraged from submitting papers or attending BAPS from rejections (which
in my experience are very common from smaller meetings like BAPS). Decent work
can always go to larger meetings such as BSG, pediatric academic society
(America), and RCPCH Spring meeting. These are good conferences with high
academic content, and they are genuinely interested in a surgical perspective on
things.

Nordine,
Thank you for voting in the poll and expressing your opinions via
the e-group. One of the reasons for the poll is to see whether
people feel BAPS is too expensive. Hopefully if a majority of the
trainees take part we will have some collective bargaining power
with the BAPS executive. I'm trying to think of other ways we could
make BAPS better/more relevant. For instance,
Would it be helpful if there was a dedicated trainee poster session
(in addition to the PPR prize)? Would this allow more people to
come? Would people feel devalued if we were in a seperate, "kiddie"
portion of BAPS? Should there be a trainee dinner? A special
trainee day rate (especially if we have a dedicated meal +
presentation session)?
All suggestions gratefully received...
In the meantime, enjoy sitting on your arse and not bothering to do
any academic work. Why not try research for a bit?
Yours
Richard

Dear Richard,
Won't be going, in Australia. Think it is too expensive and outraged that we
can't get a daily rate, as usually impossible to go for more than one or two
days because of the rota.

Two replies so far (London/SE and Trent). Is anyone else out there?
Seriously, I think it would be useful to resurrect the regional reps;
if people out there feel differently then please say so. Be warned -
if no-one replies then I may start phoning around the country...
Yours,
Richard
Happy Easter Richard

Dear All,
I am trying to compile a list of the consortia/programme
representatives - we should have a rep per programme.
Ideally, such a rep would be elected at one of your regional
training days. S/he would then be able to feed information back and
forth and act as a point of first contact for trainees with
problems/issues.
I would be grateful of any regional reps could let me know who they
are and sending me their email (richard.lindley@...). If you
don't have rep, could you elect/force someone? Just think of the
prestige it will add to your CV....
Happy Easter
Richard
Sorry, I left this out of my reply to Nordine but thought it may be
of use to everyone.
To claim income tax relief on medical expenses the Inland Revenue
state that the expense has to be essential for every practictioner
of that speciality to practice - ie every paediatric surgeon in the
country has to have that expense.
Included are:
GMC fee
RCS fee
Medical protection fee
BMA subscription (as counts as trade union)
Interestingly, loupes are included! It took me some checking
through layers of supervisors at the Revenue, but eventually someone
told me that we can claim for loupes (I did it last year). Plastic
surgeons can do the same.
You can also claim for clothes to replace ones damaged/worn out at
work and work shoes.
You cannot claim for journals or textbooks :-(
Any further queries are probably best directed at you accountant,
not me, but I hope this helps.
Sorry Nordine - not ignoring your post, just starting my new job....
I am well aware of the cost of the meeting an will bring it up at
the next education and training meeting - this is at the end of
April. I agree that blowing half your study leave budget for the
year on one training day is excessive. The poll results would back
this up so thanks to everyone who voted. It gives us a much better
negotiating position when I can say this % of trainees want X or Y.
Say hi to Jenny for me...

The following paediatricsurgerytrainees poll is now closed. Here are the
final results:
POLL QUESTION: The fee for the upcoming London

fair/reasonable. Please indicate what
you feel to an appropriate fee:
CHOICES AND RESULTS
- £<50 with no evening meal, 3 votes, 37.50%

HI Richard

the train ticket and the hotel ( significantly higher as well), the
study leave is not accepted as i have used my allowance for this year.
the courses are all about 8oo ish £
at the conlcusion the allwance for study leave should be increased,
the CME points should be higher. if not payed for by the hospital is
there any chance we can deduce it from the inland revenu ?

Dear All,
Several people have mentioned that the fee for the London meeting is
higher tha usual (£130 vs £50-80). There may be increased costs
associated with the event in London, but this is a significant price
increase.
I'd be grateful if people could indicate, via the poll, what they
feel would be a reasonable fee. I don't think the meetings could be
done for <£50 ish without making the evening meal an optional extra,
and for me this is usually one of the best bits...
Please let me know any other comments/thoughts about this. Liam and
I can then raise them at the next education and training meeting.
Thanks
Richard
