Re: [paediatricsurgerytrainees] Oxford Handbook of Poediatric Surgery

One more error in clinical information I would add. In the chapter for impalpable testis ultrasound is recommended as a valuable investigation!

Is it just me, or is anyone else out there getting really annoyed at the number of innacuracies and misprints in our new, officaly BAPS endorsed handbook?

I bought it in a fit of exam induced desperation, but have now started to compile a list of mistakes, including but not limited to:

page 12 stats - misprint sensitivity for specificty (table 1.2)

page 13 - -ve liklihood ratio wrong, should be 1-sensitivty, not specificty

page 13 - worked example epic fail (e.g. 21/21 + 4 = 84%!)

page 95 fluids - lists 5% destrose and 1/4 N slaine as an acceptable fluid - (a) has anyone ever seen 1/4 N saline as opposed to 1/5, and (b) why no mention of the NPSA guidelines which render such fluids obsolete, and why no recommendation for NPSA defined isotonic fluids in perioperative patients?

page 138 - Ramstedt pyloromyotomy first described 1907 - surely 1912?

Also again lists 0.45% saline as a maintenance fluid - NPSA would not sanction use in replacing deficit/perioperati vely

page 379 (not reading in order!) trauma fluid bolus stated as 20mls/kg rather than APLS 10ml/kg /reasses/ 10ml/kg

In the interests of accuracy and controlling my blood pressure, would people be interested in compiling a list that can be forwarded for the 2nd edition?

One other alternative that did spring to mind was to stop stressing and go out and get a life, but this does not appear to be working at present...
