these are sensible suggestion Richard. BAPS is obviously short of space and I
think this reflects pressure on trainees to present at meeting. Often high
quality clinical research is overlooked, and too often there are lots of basic
science presentations from the 'academic' institutions. Whilst these are of very
high quality, it has hard to believe that everyone is as interested in molecular
biology as me. Having a trainees session would probably not reduce on the
numbers of papers submitted as I suspect research fellows put in most of the
papers anyway, perhaps a move to clinical-based sessions would improve
accessiblity to trainees not involved in basic science research. Getting papers
accepted certainly appears to be getting more difficult, and this probably
reflects our increasing numbers (a double-edged sword), hopefully people won't
be discouraged from submitting papers or attending BAPS from rejections (which
in my experience are very common from smaller meetings like BAPS). Decent work
can always go to larger meetings such as BSG, pediatric academic society
(America), and RCPCH Spring meeting. These are good conferences with high
academic content, and they are genuinely interested in a surgical perspective on
things.

Dan Carroll
