Dear All,
Some more information about the e-logbook:
1. Appendicectomy is found under 'excision of appendix' - although
this may change as no-one can find it at present!
2. Would anyone be willing to volunteer as the junior representative
on the logbook committee, which is being set up? It would involve at
least one meeting in Edinburgh and then email communication. Ideally
someone nearish to Edinburgh would be ideal for this. Please email me
to volunteer yourself or for any queries.
3. Information relevant to elogbook and any other form of patient data
you may possess:
"This is an announcement to clarify the situation regarding the
e-portfolio system and the Data Protection Act. The Faculty of Health
Informatics has taken advice from the Information Commissioner's
Office over this issue and we wish to ensure that users are clear
about their position in relation to this.
The requirement is that every individual, working in the United
Kingdom, who keeps a record of patient related operative data where a
patient may be identifiable either directly or indirectly must be
registered with the information commissioner as a data controller.
This applies to any doctor who records operative data within the
e-portfolio system, a home grown electronic system (Excel spreadsheet,
etc), a paper based system or any other system.
The FHI logbook is registered with the Information Commissioner's
Office under the general data controller registration of the Royal
College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. We would like to be able to state
that users of the system would also be covered by this, however due to
the nature of doctors' work and because doctors are generally
employees of third party organisations we are not able to provide
blanket cover for e-portfolio users.
Guidance on how to register as a data controller can be found at:
