Re: [paediatricsurgerytrainees] Paediatric Neurosurgery

Hi Richard,

We don't do any neurosurgery at the Royal London any more either.  I checked with Mr Misra who used to close meningoceles but he stopped a few years ago and now its all done by the neurosurgeons.

Hi Richard,

In Bristol all paediatric neurosurgery is currently performed at Frenchay (North Bristol), although the Childrens is currently being expanded to accomodate all paediatric services in Bristol. We therefore have no exposure to any shunt work currently and I don't expect it will change much after the move.

So again the answers are No, No and No.

Hi,

I was just asked by one of our paediatric neurosurgeons whether
paediatric surgery trainees still get much experience at inserting
shunts and closing myelomeningoceles. He was speculating that some
units without close paediatric neurosurgery support may struggle to
maintain these services with reduced experience among new
consultants.

So just wondered how many of you, if any:

A) Are being trained to insert and revise VP Shunts.

B) Are being trained to close myelomeningoceles.

C) Would feel happy preforming these procedures as a newly qualified
consultant.

Much obliged.

Richard England
