these practicioners can help out if there is a shortage of operating staff. if there is a trainee present at all the scp must immediately withdraw from theatre and wait for the next time they are needed.
they must also be humble and accept the fact they are assistants and not there to "replace" the registrar, as one said to me recently. "i went on the retrieval and replaced the registrar".
it can be a very tense atmosphere if someone who does not make decisions tries to take the place of someone who is being trained to make decisions.

Dear All,
We have been asked by the SAC for our views on the introductions of
SCPs into paediatric surgery.
I personally think that although they may have a role in delivering
services they should never be allowed to interfere with training
opportunities for surgeons, and I have had reports of this happening.
The SAC may be able to help us on this.
Please let me know your views in the matter but most importantly if
you have an example where training has been affected by the presence
of an SCP please let me know via email/the group and I will pass this
on.
Seasons greetings and all,
Richard
