With MMC about to start taking effect, one of my concerns is how
future paediatric surgeons will enter our profession given the much
reduced experience as HO/SHO level. This may be an unfounded fear,
but, for example, for ages I wanted to be a brain surgeon until I
did paed surg as part of a rotation and loved it.
So, answers on an email please:
Year of training? Research Fellow 1999 Graduate
When did you form a firm intention to enter paediatric surgery?
medical school (or before) y
house jobs
sho jobs
spr jobs
When was your first experience of paed surgery?
medical school (or before) y
house jobs
sho jobs (bst rotation)
sho jobs (stand alone)
spr jobs
and was this when you decided on paed surgery as a career?
yes
Did you seriously intend to enter any other branch of
medicine/surgery before changing to paed surgery? n
If so, what?
When did you change your mind?
What changed it?
Any other comments about choice of paed surgery as a career or
influences on your choice?Impressed by hands on approach and support from consultants
Totally different disease spectrum from adults.
The two years for foundation is too short for most with no specific specialty learning - the new mmc foundation juniors will end up doing clinical fellow (SHO) posts in their chosen specialty before progressing to train further and I expect many to switch specialty.
In the future I see paeds surg splitting into sub specialties like adults with only a few surgeons doing the highly advanced procedures such as TOF / Pull through which / oncology may make the specialty less attractive
Thanks very much in advance...
Richard
