Hi Andrew
I was a fit 43 year old when I had a TIA (mini stroke in July 2002 I was
diagnosed with afib and put on warfarin straight away. I often woke up and
could feel a fast heart beat usually about 3 am in the morning. Many of my
friends were totally shocked because I was always fit and well. I have just
started taking magnesium this week 400 mg, I also eat bananas and one
portion of green veg/salad a day, and more than this will affect the
warfarin levels. It is good that you are aware of what is happening, my doc
has said that cardio vascular exercise is good, swimming running and
cycling, I do quite a bit of walking and go swimming almost every morning,
some days this can be an effort but it is worth it because of the feel good
factors afterwards. I live on top of a hill and walk up and down it every
day I cant's say that it has ever improved my heart rhythm
Best wishes
Pauline

Subject: [p_atrial_fib] any similar experiences??
Does anyone recognise the following causes/features? I would be
extremely grateful of any feedback/comments!
Diagnosed with PAF 5 years ago. Taking 50mg atenolol and the
occasional 75mg aspirin daily (with breakfast), more aspirin during
an episode. Over the last 5 years it has come and gone, more
prevalent when stressed - exams, work etc. ALWAYS starts when
asleep. A few drinks usually (although not always) triggers an
episode but when I'm not stressed it only usually starts the night
after, and then not always. For the last year any vigorous exercise
in the evening (gym, running, etc...) will trigger an episode. I
drink one coffee a day otherwise no caffeine.
Episodes last until I do some exercise to get the rhythm under
control - there is a particular hill close to where I live which, if
I manage to run to the top, I usually find myself in NSR. Sometimes
the episodes will end without me doing anything - 15% say.
I am a fit 37yo male (although could lose a few kg but being tall
you don't notice), don't smoke, good diet (although I will be
increasing my magnesium diet after your good advice). Does any of
this ring any bells with anyone?? Any suggestions on how to manage
it better? Any opinions on whether I should be exercising to get
myself into NSR? I read about strokes and.. panic a little!
Many thanks. This is my first post. There is so much information
out there I thought it may be simpler to ask!
