Cuban Progress in Angiology
Havana, Jun 3 (Prensa
Latina) Cuba has attained remarkable achievements in the application of
regenerative medicine in angiology, with its first tests on animals three years
ago and now successfully applied on humans.
Dr. Jose Fernandez
Montequin, president of the Cuban Angiology and Vascular Surgery Association,
told the National Information Agency (AIN) this kind of medicine ranges from
the use of mother cells to genetic therapy, and has resulting in the creation
of a Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor.
This therapy, obtained
by scientists at the Cuban Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center, leads
to regeneration of vessels vaccinated near an obstructed area, the Cuban expert
said.
Fernandez Montequin
referred to Citroprot-P medicine as one of the latest Cuban achievements in
molecular biology and the only of its kind in the world. It helps improve the
formation of scar tissue in patients suffering from diabetes, thus avoiding
amputation in most cases.
Ozone therapy has also
had outstanding results in Cubans with vascular diseases, mainly in the
treatment of venous ulcers and patients with diabetic feet, the expert
highlighted.
