North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue today signed a bill banning smoking in bars
and restaurants, although not in other workplaces or public places. The ban
goes into effect January 2, 2010.

North Carolina is the nation's top tobacco-producing state. Private clubs and
cigar bars are exempted from the ban. The law is non-premptive; localities can
ban smoking in other publc places if they wish.
