Subject: my story

November 3rd is a month a date to people, but to me is much more. I'll explain

Last November 3rd I almost died because my colon was to explode inside of me,
but it didn't have a chance too. Because a doctor was on call that day his name
is Dr. Merrell and he saved my life. I'm very thankful for him; even though my
colostomy hasn't been easy life isn't easy itself.

I have been thinking about that date for awhile now, I was in "Circuit City" on
September 25, 2005 and I was buying a camera and I couldn't move for a minute or
so because I thought to myself "this was the last store I came in before I knew
that I was real sick" but I forced myself to go on and buy the digital camera
that I wanted.

November 2nd was the "big election day" to see what president we'd get for the
USA, my niece Hailey had come over that day and we were playing and I took a
picture of her talking to my sister whom lives in Florida. My mom went to work
so I stayed home listened to some music, after she came home we went to the mall
and I was "fine" we came home I went to sleep early because I was tired.

November 3rd came, I could feel something was wrong but I wasn't sure what it
was. So the day went by and around 12 I told my mom that I was in a lot of pain,
so she put me in bed and gave me some pain medication but it didn't help. So she
called 911 the ambulance came and brought me to the hospital. There they took
x-rays and that's when they found out my colon was about to explode so they got
a surgeon to come check me out. I was very scared; he told me that I would need
a colostomy. I signed the papers to let him know that I had agreed to let him do
what he needed to do. I came out of the operating room around nine pm and I
asked my mom "do I have the bag?" she said yes. The next couple days were hard,
because I had to get use to having the colostomy. I went home on November 12,
2005 it was a Saturday a nurse had come out to see me and got the papers ready
for the nurses to come and see me for awhile.

October 27, 2005 I'm alive, I still have my colostomy I'm engaged now. I'm in
college, next semester Spring 2006 I'm going to go take a class on campus. I
haven't done that since March 2005. Since the sugary November 3rd, 2005 I have a
prolapsed December 10, 2004, I have had some stoma tissue taken out. My teeth
worked on, but I'm glad that I'm alive and telling my story.

Thanks for the help. Another group told me about buying hole cutters
from Nu-hope.com. I will also get a pair of curved scissors so that I
have options.

I really appreciate you help.

Thanks

Yes there is a hole cutter for wafers. They can be ordered through your supply
company. Some companies will also precut the wafer for you. I've had my ostomy
since 1993 and use curved scissors. Stomas are't perfectly round and with the
scissors I can get a much better fit. After 12 years of cutting, I've got it
down pat. LOL

hey everyone I'm write about my ostomy for my english class, I'd like you to
read it and tell me if I should edit some parts add

Last November I had to have emergency surgery because my colon wasn't doing
good, the doctor told me that I had a 50 50 chance of coming out of surgery I
was scared, the days were hard after the surgery because I had a colostomy and I
had to get adjusted to it. I got to go home November 12 and it wasn't easy
because I had nurses come in and change my colostomy bag and I wasn't use to it,
they told me that it will take time.

Now it's almost been a month since I have had the colostomy I'm pretty much
adjusted to it, I have met a lot of nice people threw the nurses system and now
I'm ready to get discharged from them and get help from another program. The
nurses and home health aides have helped me cope with my colostomy. My mom and I
have figured out ways of doing the bag and we always come up with new idea's,
I'm great full for my mom.

If I haven't gotten the colostomy I would have died without it, on the days that
I get frustrated I think that it has saved my life.

6 month ago I had a urostomy, I am 26, at first I felt - what's the
use living - I had a lengthy session with a counselor who told me
that my urostomy, bag and all, is my friend - who saved my life and
allows me even to exist. It helped. Today - I have to remind myself
that the urostomy and bag is there. Thanks to Convatec I have no
problems. A very secure appliance. I realize that a colostomy is
different - but think about it. That thing saved your life.

This story was written by a doctor who worked in South Africa...

One night I had worked hard to help a mother in the labor ward; but
in spite of all we could do, she died leaving us with a tiny premature
baby and a crying two-year-old daughter. We would have difficulty keeping the
baby alive, as we had no incubator (we had no electricity to run an incubator).

We also had no special feeding facilities Although we lived on the
equator, nights were often chilly with treacherous drafts. One
student midwife went for the box we had for such babies and the cotton wool that
the baby would be wrapped in.

Another went to stoke up the fire and fill a hot water bottle. She
came back shortly in distress to tell me that in filling the bottle, it
had burst (rubber perishes easily in tropical climates). "And it is our
last hot water bottle!" she exclaimed. As in the West, it is no good
crying over spilled milk so in Central Africa it might be considered no good
crying over burst water bottles. They do not grow on trees, and there are no
drugstores down forest pathways.

"All right," I said, "put the baby as near the fire as you safely can,
and sleep between the baby and the door to keep it free from drafts.
Your job is to keep the baby warm."

The following noon, as I did most days, I went to have prayers with any
of the orphanage children who chose to gather with me. I gave the
youngsters various suggestions of things to pray about and told them
about the tiny baby. I explained our problem about keeping the baby
warm enough, mentioning the hot water bottle, and that the baby could so
easily die if it got chills. I also told them of the two-year-old sister, crying
because her mother had died.

During prayer time, one ten-year old girl, Ruth, prayed with the usual
blunt conciseness of our African children. "Please, God" she prayed,
"send us a water bottle. It'll be no good tomorrow, God, as the baby
will be dead, so please send it this afternoon."

While I gasped inwardly at the audacity of the prayer, she added, "And
while You are about it, would You please send a dolly for the little girl so
she'll know You really love her?"

As often with children's prayers, I was put on the spot. Could I honestly
say,"Amen". I just did not believe that God could do this. Oh, yes, I know that
He can do everything, the Bible says so. But there are limits, aren't there? The
only way God could answer this particular prayer would be by sending me a parcel
from homeland. I had been in Africa for almost four years at that time, and I
had never, ever received a parcel from home Anyway, if anyone did send me a
parcel, who would put in a hot water bottle? I lived on the equator! Halfway
through the afternoon, while I was teaching in the nurses' training school, a
message was sent that there was a car at my front door.

By the time I reached home, the car had gone, but there, on the veranda,
was a large twenty-two pound parcel. I felt tears pricking my eyes. I
could not open the parcel alone, so I sent for the orphanage children.

Together we pulled off the string, carefully undoing each knot. We
folded the paper, taking care not to tear it unduly. Excitement was
mounting. Some thirty or forty pairs of eyes were focused on the large
cardboard box.

From the top, I lifted out brightly colored, knitted jerseys. Eyes
sparkled as I gave them out. Then there were the knitted bandages for
the leprosy patients, and the children looked a little bored. Then
came a box of mixed raisins and sultanas - that would make a batch of buns for
the weekend. Then, as I put my hand in again, I felt the.....could
it really be? I grasped it and pulled it out - yes, a brand-new, rubber
hot water bottle. I cried. I had not asked God to send it; I had not
truly believed that He could. Ruth was in the front row of the children.
She rushed forward, crying out, "If God has sent the bottle, He must
have sent the dolly too!"

Rummaging down to the bottom of the box, she pulled out the small,
beautifully dressed dolly. Her eyes shone! She had never doubted!

Looking up at me, she asked: "Can I go over with you and give this dolly
to that little girl, so she'll know that Jesus really loves her?"

That parcel had been on the way for five whole months. Packed up by my
former Sunday school class, whose leader had heard and obeyed God's
prompting to send a hot water bottle, even to the equator. And one of
the girls had put in a dolly for an African child - five months before,
in answer to the believing prayer of a ten-year-old to bring it "that
afternoon."

"Before they call, I will answer" (Isaiah 65:24)

This awesome prayer takes less than a minute. When you receive this,
say the prayer, that's all you have to do. No strings attached. Just
send it on to whomever you want - but do send it on. Prayer is one of
the best free gifts we receive. There is no cost but a lot of rewards.

Let's continue praying for one another. Father, I ask you to bless my
friends reading this right now. I am asking You to minister to their
spirit at this very moment. Where there is pain, give them Your peace
and mercy. Where there is self doubting, release a renewed confidence
to work through them. Where there is tiredness or exhaustion, I ask You
to give them understanding, guidance, and strength as they learn
submission to Your leading. Where there is spiritual stagnation, I ask You to
renew them by revealing Your nearness, and by drawing them into greater intimacy
with You. Where there is fear, reveal Your love, and release to them Your
courage. Where there is a sin blocking them, reveal it, and break its hold over
my friend's life. Bless their finances, give them greater vision, and raise up
leaders and friends to support and encourage them. Give each of them discernment
to recognize the evil forces around them, and reveal to them the power they have
in You to defeat it. I ask you to do these things in Jesus' name.

P.S. Passing this on to anyone you consider a friend will bless you both.
Passing this on to one not considered a friend is something Christ would do.

"Do not ask the Lord to guide your footsteps if you're not willing to
move your feet."--

what had happened to me.Now my biggest problem is the food I eat goes in my
mouth and straight to the bag, lol,I won't get fat this way,its a whole new way
of living,I haven't had to many leaks, knock wood! Did your ET nurse suggest
trying a different wafer[convexity],and for your skin under the wafer ,soak a
paper towel in white vinegar and try to put on your skin when you change,it
should help clear it up! Sue

Novemember 3rd, 2004 The day started out like normal but then I started to
get real bad spasms so my mom put me in bed and that didn't help so then she
called 911 they took me to the hosptial and they did x-rays and they noticed
my colon was going to burst so then they called a surgen and he told me that
I had a 50/50 chance of coming out of the surgery. I remember telling him
that if he lost me I'd haunt him for the rest of my life.

I just can't get that out of my head, I try to forget about it but I can't,
its hard for me to sleep because I keep thinking of it and its driving me
nuts! I wish I could forget about it because then it would make things
easier for me. I know now that I'm alive and I'm not going to die, but thats
the one thing that I keep thinking about.

I'm writing a letter to the doctor who saved my life that day and going to
give it to him in person on November 3rd 2005 and going to thank him for
saving my life, even though the colostomy drives me nuts sometimes. Before
the colostomy I would think life wasn't worth it, but after I almost died I
don't think that way anymore, so the colostomy has changed me.

I do need some support though because I'm going nuts thinking about that day
when I see Halloween candy I think that last Halloween could have been my
last one.

If anyone could give me support that would be good,
~Min~

The Aussie chat of the week takes place on Sunday, 6pm - 9pm Perth
Time which is:

UK - 11am - 2pm
Seattle - 3am - 6am
Houston - 5am - 8am
New York - 6am - 9am

All ostomists welcome, whatever the condition, whatever the age.
Maybe you face a possible ostomy in the future? Or simply want more
information? All are welcome.

Want to chat another time? The rooms are open 24/7 and are becoming
increasingly busy throughout the weekend. Drop by and see if anyone
is there.

=========

To join Ostomyland via java go to:
http://www.ostomysupport.info/chat.html (Jason's page)

Or http://www.autoimmunity.co.uk/chat/ostomyland.html (Kathy's page)

and join us in the ostomyland chat room from there. A free-to-use
Java Client is embedded into the page that is dead easy to use.
Nothing to download.

=========

If you use mIRC, or Besirc or some other IRC Chat Client, here's the
server details you need to connect to Ostomyland:

Server: irc.zirc.org
Port: 6667
Channel: #ostomyland

If you prefer a specially configured version of mIRC is now available
which will take people directly to the new channel on the new server.
Full details and the download link can be found at
http://www.ostomysupport.info/mirc.html
(This is my favourite - mIRC can do so much more!)

WebTV Users, you need to use your own TV based software to join us -
included free as part of the WebTV browser software. Use the server
and port and channel
info when requested by your software to join.

=========

We often have members who have never been in a chatroom before.
Please don't be nervous. These pages will show you exactly what to
expect and what to do. If you're still unsure after you've looked at
them, email me for help.

http://www.autoimmunity.co.uk/chat/chathelp14.html

=========

The channels are open 24/7 for general chit chat or ostomy talk
during the week, and are becoming increasingly busy. If you drop by
and it's quiet, stay a while - someone else may join the room soon.

=========

Look forward to seeing you in the meeting, the weekend or later on
in the week.

Kathy :)
