Re: [Ostomates Support] Ostomies and Yeast Infections

Hi,
I have had my ileostomy since 1987 and until recently was problem free. Last
summer i developed a pretty bad case of pnuemonia, wich the doctor treated with
some pretty high doses of anti-biotics. This in turn helped to get a whopper of
a case candiasis going, i had pretty severe symptoms, itching, burning, weeping
ulcerated sores on the peristomal skin, AND my appliance wear time went from
about 7-10 days down to 2-3 before it gave out. I did some research on the net
and came up with some pretty interesting info, it can be found at the following
sites,
http://www.candida-yeast.com/
http://alces.med.umn.edu/Candida.html
http://www.panix.com/~candida/
This is by no means a comprehensive list, just some that i had bookmarked, do a
google search for candida albicans and your sure to come up with tons of info.
Now on to how i have dealt with it, my doctor put me on diflucan
http://www.diflucan.com/ a program of one pill a day for 1 week. This cleared
it up fine. Then this past Jan I was hit by a sinus infection, guess what, more
anti-biotics and more yeast, this time I decided to forgo the doctor and try a
pro-biotic regimen and some diet changes, I got Dr. William Crook`s book, "The
Yeast Connection Cookbook" and also went on a probiotic program of :
1-Garlic pills, one per day 1650mg
2-Acidophilus Lactobacillus, two, twice per day, morn & nite
3-Capryllic Acid one, twice per day morn & nite.
This combined with a moderate change in my diet wiped out the yeast in about 2
1/2 weeks and i continue to stay on a reduced pro-biotic regimen to keep it at
bay (approx one half of what i listed above). Another thing, due to the highly
irritated peristomal skin i changed my appliance changing habits and some of the
products i used.
Before- I used Convatec Durahesive wafers with a convex insert, stomahesive
paste, and Smith&Nephew adhesive remover wipes.I believe the added pressure from
the convex inserts contributed to the raw-ness, sort of like having a bed sore
from the pressure, let me tell you between the raw red skin and the solvents in
the smith&nephew adhesive remover and the alcohol in the stomahesive paste,
appliance changes became literally excruciating!

I modified this , keeping the Durahesive wafer`s but changing the adhesive
remover to Convatec "Allkare"
wipes-http://www.convatec.com/en_US/products/catalog/Product.jhtml?PRODID=10736&\
CATID=220
(MUCH gentler) and ditching the convex inserts for "Eakin seals"
220
.I also stopped using the convex inserts and cut stomahesive paste useage by
approx 50%. I cut my change time down to no more than 3 days and have slowly
been working back to where I feel confident/comfortable going 5-7 days. So far I
have benn yeast/irritation free since march and am doing well. Another great
resource for help is the UOA message boards
http://www.uoa.org/discussion/genboard0305/ , browse thru the archives and youll
find alot of good ideas/help for this problem. This is what worked for me, and
by no means is an endorsement for any medical protocol, consult your doctor and
see what he/she says. I know this rambled a bit but I know just how terrible a
nasty yeast infection can become, my advise DO NOT let it get out of hand, the
sooner you take action the better off youll be. Best of luck!!

Regards,
Chris

Subject: [Ostomates Support] Ostomies and Yeast Infections

Hi Everyone,

I had a colostomy done in 1996 and within the last few weeks, for
the first time since I have had my colostomy, I have gotten a yeast
infection.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to treat it? I did go to the
doctor and he gave me some cream to put on it and it is healing up.
But if anyone has any other suggestions, they would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks!!

Ask your doctor for a prescription for Nystatin powder, Anneke, and use it instead of the cream b/c your wafer will hold better. My ET told me to change as...
