We are studying parent-directed, home based, behavioral programs for young children (1-7 years of age) with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Please consider reviewing this survey and then participating. The purpose of the study is to understand how parents manage these programs. Further, we hope that by presenting these findings to the behavioral and public policy community, that better funding and other supports for parents conducting home programs may be made available. To view the survey and participate, go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/EIBI

For additional information about the survey please contact Dr. Jack Scott at jscott@... or call 561 251-4104.

Hello everyone! I'm new to the group as of today. I live in the
Acworth/Woodstock area and have 2 teenage children (girl, 14, and son, 16) that
are both diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. Our daughter is new to our family
as we are currently in the adoption process with her. She seems to be
exhibiting some more severe/limiting social skills issues than we have
experienced with our son. Currently, she also lacks any control in the area of
impulse control, or understanding fully what is real and what is fantasy/made-up
ideas and suggestions of what is real. I am currently seeking a psychologist
that will accept medicaid and will work with her, as well as any social skills
groups that I may enroll her in that would also help her to continuing to
develop and gain some self confidence. Does anyone have any
ideas/recommendations on who I may contact to find these services?

I appreciate the help tremendously. Thank you!

Hi Kim:

My name is Renee and I started the Canton Asperger's Teen Club with my son Joe.  We meet once a month and go bowling or out for pizza.  The kids are between 14-17 yrs. old.  Most of the members are boys, but we do get girls occasionally.

Go to meetup.com and join us.  Our next meetup is August 17th.

Does anyone know anything about the the GA Virtual Academy or GA Cyber Academy,
especially special education? I know that this is a public school that's done
at home with the parents as the teacher. The students also have IEPs and
receive services and must take the CRCT. I have been thinking about using this
at home with my son who has autism because the public school here doesn't know
how to teach my son and doesn't care. We have wasted so much time hoping things
would change and I'm afraid if we don't do something now, then it's going to be
too late.

Pardon the late response. The GA Virtual Academy was re-named the GA Cyber
Academy -- same organization. You can find more information at:

http://www.k12.com/gca/

They only have a limited number of spaces, and they've already held the lottery
for the 2010-2011 school year. So, your child will most likely be wait-listed
if you are even allowed to attempt enrollment at this stage of the game.

I'm pretty sure the enrollment process begins in March or April for the
following year.

If your child is getting any meaninful access to his typically developing peers
in his current setting, maybe you can do homework with him to keep him on track
academically while allowing him access to his typically developing peers at
school. Of course, the further he falls behind academically, the more likely it
will be that he will become more and more segregated from any meaningful peer
interaction opportunities.

Hang in there !

Nina :-)

Hi everyone!
Shenanigans is now registering for fall improv acting classes and September school break puppetry and art camp

Our weekly classes offer improv acting for children through adults. This is a fun social activity that also happens to address social communications skills through acting games that focus on recognizing verbal and nonverbal cues, empathy, back-and-forth conversation, working as a team, developing trust, and more.

We're excited about how our puppetry and art camps resonated with our kiddos over the summer. September school break camp (Sept 20-24) will bring the best of both to our campers! Campers will create a variety of puppets, give them voice and character, and present a family and friends show at the end of the week. We'll also explore creating modern 2D and 3D art inspired by the styles of contemporary artists. We're considering several locations convenient to Cobb-Cherokee area. (If you know of space available, please give me a call!)

Weekly classes are scheduled in east Marietta, east Cobb, and Buckhead. We will be announcing more classes shortly that will be held through several area academies and autism/DD organizations around the metro area.

All of our instructors are experienced, talented actors who have been touched personally or professionally by autism and who have a passion for our mission.

NOW Waivers considered.

Contact me for details and registration. Thanks!

Hi folks,

Recently we have had a number of parents call and indicate that they believe GA
Law requires insurance carriers to cover ABA Therapy for children with Autism.

We wish this were the case. However, in each instance the parents had received
misinformation from someone with good intentions who just did not know the
entire story.

You can read about this process and what happened at the Autism Votes website.
The link below will take you directly into the section on the HB426 and SB161
process in Georgia during the 2009 Legislative Session.
http://www.autismvotes.org/site/c.frKNI3PCImE/b.4425411/k.BD73/Georgia.htm

The bills were tabled in March 2009 with intent to refer to committee. This
killed the bills for the 2009 legislative session. They were not brought to the
floor in the 2010 session which ended 4/29/10.

I wish I had better news for folks on this issue.

Thanks,

-Robert W. Montgomery, Ph.D., BCBA-D

SEPTEMBER BREAK PUPPETRY AND ART CAMP! (Sept 20-24)
If you're looking for something to entertain the kiddos during the September school break, check out our new Puppetry and Art Camp! We introduced puppetry and art in our summer camps, and these really resonated with our campers. Each camper created and built several types of puppets, then gave them a voice and character for our family and friends show at the end of the week. Art camp also was a lot of creative fun as we created modern 2D and 3D art pieces with paints and found objects, inspired by the styles of contemporary artists. We're bringing the best of both to our September camp! Location is Sacred Tapestry, 3000 Johnson Ferry Rd, Marietta 30062 (south of Shallowford Rd, just beyond the YMCA.) Call Sandy to sign up - contact info below.

Hi, i have been granted an IEE for a FBA & Assistive Technology/ACC for my
daughter. She is 11 years old, non verbal, uses PECS, and can exhibit behavior
issues during fustrations. I am located in South Georgia and looking for someone

I am a single-mother with a 3yr old child that is special needs.  She was just diagnosed with Autism and not sure if whether or not she has mitochondrial disorder is still being confirmed.  I have been worked in 4yrs because I have been taking care of my daughter, but now that I have finished school im ready to start my career.  My question is how do I balance out starting my career and taking care of my daughter because I do have to work at some time in my life im just 26.  Also are there any agencies that can come into the home?   She is already going to a school where medicaid pays and I was told that I had to choose between the school and nurses coming out to the home.  However, with trying to find a job I need all the help I can get.

Myles-A-Part will sponsor its 4th Annual Married Couples' Retreat at the WinShape Retreat Center Friday, December 3 - Sunday, December 5. We offer this retreat every year as a time for couples raising kids on the spectrum to recharge personally, reconnect with their spouse, and to meet other couples experiencing similar challenges and rewards.

It is absolutely free of charge, but the number of couples we can take is limited, so we select a few couples from the applicants we receive. If you know of someone who would be interested, please pass this information onto them. Feel free to post on message boards or in any forum you deem appropriate.

The application is attached, or can be found at the link below.
