Re: [opengaautism] Home School and Aspergers

Ditto, my 9 yo AS son- 4Th grade is "stressed to the max" as well.
He's still awake trying to diagram sentences after a > 1 hr 'meltdown"
this afternoon. UGH !!! I cannot homeschool due to necessity to work
and provide financially for us. Our County system is not very good -
for anybody- and he is in private Christian School. He's in a class
of # 14 kids ( #7- 4TH, #7- 5Th graders) and since he's known most of
them for 4 years he does now talk and socialize on occasion- much more
than in the general population. He's STARTING to finally be a bit
sociable with the boys there his age. However, I am really beginning
to wonder if this is the right school for him academically- as as hard
as I try to explain- staff just DOES NOT GET the AS quirky issues- and
accomodations sometimes needed. They feel he should be able to "pull
his weight" regardless of any "issues". He's very bright- but he is
struggling with the ABeka curriculum this year - increased excutive
functioning skills needed. I contacted the public school and in our
COUNTY a child CANNOT receive OT services unless they are a student in
the public school- unlike Speech Therapy- etc. Also here, OT services
in the schools does not focus on sensory intergration issues. My son
has MAJOR sensory issues !! Fortunately I found out today- after
waiting 2 months- the medical insurance did APPROVE 12 weeks of OT,
and he restarts private OT next week- some kind of Aquatherapy for
vestibular stimulation ??. There is another private school in our area
specializing in ADD/learning differences - but I simply CANNOT AFFORD
that option right now.
Good luck with your 4Th grader.
