   Hi Ed and Starry

good to see you around Ed - hope you're doing ok with the prozac. I started on
an antidepressant called citolapram - which is used mainly for anxiety.

Hey - Starry, I usually pop into chat on Thurs - usually only one other person
there - they are either not at their computers or not talking to me!!

Been in a relationship for 5 months now - so gave my boyfriend a video on OCD
and also a little booklet - which he found the time to watch and read - so he
has more understanding of the condition.

Hope everyone is ok ..... Denise x

Hi Leanne!
Welcome to our group!!
I think you can really talk to ANYONE in here, as we all might not
have the same ticks...but we have the same understanding what those
ticks are and the effect they have on us!!
I'm 42 and I've had OCD since I was 12, but only diagnosed in 1992.
I'm on medication, Zoloft/Lustral 200mg per day, but am thinking of
having it changed back to Anafranil. I liked that...and I've been on
Zoloft forever, it seems, so I'd like to go for a wee change.
I've had some questions, I've had some very PERSONAL questions, and
I've made some EXCELLENT friends on here...so, feel free to post
anything and everything.

There is a chat on here every Thursday night, 9pm, I believe. I've
never made it in to the chat area...I'm always too early and then I
forget about it. But, it's supposed to be very interesting...so try
to make that.

Again, welcome to our group!

Star/Charmaine

Hi there,

there are a number of other ocd forums which have areas especially
for parents - try

http://www.ocdaction.org.uk/forum/index.php

Are you in the UK????

There is an EXCELLENT web site which has been produced by Isobel
Heyman (Institute of psychiatry, London UK) JUST for young people
with OCD it is at

http://www.ocdyouth.info/default.aspx

In fact, if you are in the UK you could try getting your child
referred to her clinic.

Best Wishes

Hi, it's Anthony again, just wondering if any new or old members
want to take part in my research. I have posted this before and am
delighted to have had some response, but if anyone else would like
to help, it would be fantastic.

It's just filling out a simple non-intrusive questionnaire, which
can be done easily through email. The findings from the research
will be used to add to the knowledge of OCD and help people like us.
The whole reason I am doing this is because I am a sufferer too, and
want answers too!!

Just drop me a line if you're interetsed or just want to know more.

Thanks and take care,

Anthony.

Hi, again, Denise...
Paul,
I have been in there a couple of times...mostly too early, but I don't
recall having to put in a password. I, as Denise stated, have gone
through the one that I get in the email.
Thursday, try clicking on the link in the email and see how you get on.

Hi Ed,

I'm not an expert, but I have suffered with OCD since
I'd say 7 years of age, and I am now 24. Having
suffered with the disorder and now studying it as part
of my Psychology degree I can tell you that your
symptoms are common, I have mostly checking ones,
light switches etc and some slight contamination ones.
Thoughts too, its the thoughts that are the obsessions
and the behaviours that are the compulsions. When you
have an obsessive thought, usually due to some
anxiety, (it's an anxiety disorder)you carry out a
ritualistic act, or compulsion to remove the anxiety.
It's a spiral and will almost certainly get worse. You
need to to seek help, therapy first, then they may
offer medication, depending on the severity.

OCD is a 'secretive disorder' the reason being that
people who have it know its irrational, but simply
can't help themselves, so keep it secret because they
think they are mad, but it is not 'madness' as you are
aware it is irrational behaviour.

Get some help Ed, there are lots of us out there the
same, you would be surprised!

Let me know how you get on and take care.

Anthony

Ed

I have had ocd most of my life up to a couple of years ago. There is help. I
got it and now my ocd is under control. Get help. I would recommend as a
minimum you see a therapist if you can. Any therapist will probably help some
and a therapist who knows about ocd will help more. Good Luck

Hi, my Name is Anthony. I am 24 and live in Greatham in the North
East. I am currently a final year Psychology student and have
suffered with OCD from an early age (7ish?). My suffering has
prompted me to carry out my third year research into the topic and
hopefully provide more answers for people like us!

Anyway if anyone is interested in taking part just drop me a line.
You can help me make a difference.

Just wanted to say thanks for your kind messages!!!

I know I am so lucky to have friends who are there and who I have
pretty much told all of the horrific thoughts to. They don't pretend
to know what it's like but they listen and don't turn away. I have
to say that's not always been the case, and my family have had a
really hard time with it and still can't accept it.

What has helped me recently more than anything is acceptance of
myself. I know what you mean about it coming back when tired and
stressed - things which seem to be unavoidable nowadays.

The ITV drama Dirty Filthy Love was excellent and won some kind of
award recently. I just thought the fact that it was a drama on
primetime TV about ocd was such a step forward. When I was
officially diagnosed about 8 years ago now, I can't say I'd ever
really heard much about it.

Hope everyone is well!

Welcome, Jo!
I don't post very often, unless I have something really massive to
say. But, figured I'd start giving a warm welcome to new people who
come in.

Whew! If I had 2p for every friend I have lost due to OCD, I'd be a
millionaire! The ones who stick by you are the best friend anyone
could ever hope for.

I guess I missed the ITV drama...maybe it'll come on again. Good, was it?

Jo, I've posted some things on here...and some VERY personal. I can
say that EVERYONE is very nice here...and may not have an answer for
you...and may not have the same type of OCD...but they UNDERSTAND and
give you their opinion, debate, argue, and suggest. They are the best
bunch of people I've ever "online met".

Hope you like it here...

Hi everyone!

My name is Jo and I have suffered from OCD since I was 11 - so 15
years now. The past year has been a complete nightmare and finally
feel like I'm starting to get back on my feet. It's nice to know
that there are groups like this - just reading some of the messages
posted is really comforting, because I'm reminded that i'm not alone.

I have morbid obsessive thoughts,Checking compulsions and
contamination fears, and to really top it all off, have been
suffering depression badly for over a year now. Things are getting
easier - I'm lucky because my closest friends have been so
supportive of everything and totally accepting of me. I realise how
difficult it's been for them at times. I'm not in a relationship,
but it really tests my friendships to the limit. Not everyone has
been able to handle everything that's happened to me particularly
well.

What did everyone think about the ITV Drama Dirty Filthy Love that
was on? It's good to know that finally ocd is becoming more
recognised.

Take care!

Jo x

Liz and Denise, (and of course, the rest)

Thank you both so much for your comments. I'm not OLD, OLD...but
older than a lot of people who are in here or online. And, I guess
too old to be reading that word over and over. I'm no prude, by any
means...I use it as well...but not on here. Time and place for
everything.

I do hope, however, that I wasn't too cranky to put off the new person
coming back and chatting/posting. I'm sorry if I was. Welcome, new
person, and please don't be afraid to come back.

I have not ever met anyone in person with OCD, but this forum sure
helps and others that I'm in/were in. You find out you aren't the
weirdest person alive. You aren't the only one who has really morbid
thoughts. You aren't the only one who feels like a total nutcase.
Plus, you get to find out that if a particular drug/therapy is no
good, OR is of fantastic use, first hand.

I have a book called THE OCD WORKBOOK. It's ok. It's kind of a daily
work book that you fill in stuff....and it's to try to help you
"overcome" OCD. I don't think anyone ever overcomes it...but it
certainly gives you a goal to work towards. I have done some
highlighting in it (LOVE highlighters and books....what a pair), but I
haven't written anything in it as yet. I guess it doesn't work if I
don't put my effort in it, eh?!!haha. But, the stuff in it is really
quite useful. I got it off Amazon.

Here's two PERSONAL QUESTIONS...I'm not too awfully shy about anything
related to my OCD...

1> For married folks: Does this present a problem in your marriage,
and how much of it is a problem? I ask because we're having some
pretty serious problems right now and I feel that most of it is due to
the OCD, but I feel like I'm blaming it for things that might not be
related to it.

2> For women only (no men, simply because we all get the lowdown on
you all in this area from everything we read, but there's nothing
about women): Sex drive? Do you have it? Have you ever had it? Is
it better/worse with/without meds?
Again, I'm asking because we'er having difficulty in this area, as
well. 6 years we've been married...and again, I don't want to blame
my OCD for something that might not be related to it.

Plus, we have two cultures living in the house. I believe I have said
before that I'm American and my husband is Scottish. We live in
Scotland.

My email is
charmaine@...
if anyone would like to answer in personal email only.

Thanks again for the support on my answer to the new person...and
thanks for listening to me babble and my questions...

Hi there...
First, can I just say, (and this is only MY opinion) to get our point
across...I don't really feel we need to use the "f" word as a noun,
pronoun, verb, or adjective. But, hey...I'm an old lady, so maybe
it's just me.

You say you probably have the "worst type of OCD"...yet, you have been
to Uni and you are/were employed as you say you can't make friends at
work. I know people that are literally housebound, have never worked,
and couldn't even dream of attending, let alone completing, Uni. So,
we're clear that you don't have the worst type, which is good news for
you!!!
>>>I decided to join this forum because i dont know what to do.
I think that's a brilliant start on what to do!!!! You've "admitted"
you have OCD, you've looked around and found people of your own OCD
world, and you've taken a huge step by saying you need some sort of help.

>>>its so bad I dont want to say what the side effects are.
I'm not being nosy...ok, so I am....but what ARE your side effects?
To one of us, it may seem that we're the only ones who have those
particular side effects and it might be useful to one of us to know
we're not alone. Plus, you might bond particularly well with a person
that might have the same thing.

>>>I keep getting pressurised by the
people in the jobcentre to find a job, but I cant get one because of
my problem, I had one last Thursday it was terrible.
Have you told the people at the JobCentre that you have OCD? You
might want to have your doctor write you a letter. Also, there's
plenty of Civil Servant jobs available in IT, and this being a
government body tend to hire a certain number of "disabled" persons.
I, myself, am a Civil Servant...and I advised on my application that I
have OCD. I had to do some testing with the H/S doctor, but
obviously, I passed...and it's very nice and relaxing that I have
"admitted" to people in my work and my employer that I have this.
Although I don't like allowances made for me...by law, they must. It
sure makes it easier to go to work in a relaxed state, rather than
trying to hide everything and being a total wreck when I get home.
So, that might be an option you would like to venture into. Speak to
the people at the JobCentre and be honest.

>>>Unfortunately im still living at home because of this problem. My
father doesnt give a fuck and is happy I have this problem, my mother
keeps pretending that I dont have a problem ( because she cant deal
with it anymore) and keeps forcing me into situations which cause me
to humiliate myself.

Although I don't know your family, I can feel safe about saying your
father isn't happy that you have any type of a problem. He's probably
just at his wits end, not knowing how to be non-OCD in an OCD world.
I've been through two parents, a sibling, two husbands (well, I'm on
my second), a million friends, TWO million jobs, and I know full well
what the other people in my world have been through. It's hard. It's
extremely hard. You say your mother pretends you don't have it...that
may well be true. Unfortunately, to a great many people, burying our
heads is the best way of coping with a horrific situation. You've
heard the saying DON'T LOOK AND IT WON'T HURT. Although we KNOW
that's not true...most of us do it from time to time.
I am curious as to what situations you speak of that she puts you in
to humiliate yourself.

>>>I actually think i can beat it beacuse I meditate, but the thing is
> im not being given time to to develop the skills to block the
> thoughts
I have lived with OCD since age of 12. I'm 42 now. There is no
"time" to develop skills. There is no "time" that you can take out of
your day to block thoughts. If I took all the time I needed to
develop skills, time would stop and I would be an old, old lady, still
trying to develop the skills. I don't mean to be hard, rash, or
offensive, but it is LIFE...and you just need to read books regarding
OCD, get on the internet and find as much out as possible, visit your
doctor regularly, if you're not on medication...perhaps the doctor can
find one that suits you. I've been on it all...and I'm on
Zoloft/200mg per day. It's my lifesaver. I was an original "tester"
for Zoloft when it first came about for OCD patients. I've tried
others, but I tend to like Zoloft.
Each day you live and each breath you take, you are developing skills
and you should be learning to block thoughts. Know everything you can
about your illness...and please, stop calling it a "problem". It's
not a problem, it's OCD.

On closing, I left the last bit of your posting on my email as I must
admit, I just don't understand it. I'm not a doctor, by any means,
but usually, I'm pretty good at figuring out (or coming close) to
understanding what another OCDer means...but you say it's started in
1998 as a compulsion disorder. And, then you speak of your "side
effect". Again, whether it's being curious or not understanding or
just plain being nosy...what is this side effect?

Also, I assume you have visited your doctor and advised him/her of
your feelings at this time? Do you keep a journal?

Again, to yourself...and anyone else who is reading this...I am not
meaning to offend or cause ill-feelings....it's simply my opinion.

Thanks!

Hi im new. I decided to join this forum because i dont know what the
**** to do.

Heres my situation....I probably have the worst type of OCD its so
bad I dont want to say what the side effects are. As a result I cant
make friends or get work. Everywhere i go im a target I had to stop
going out and everytime I go into shops people just want to get rid
of me, anytime I go anywhere people want to get rid of me.

Right now is particualrly depressing I have finished University and I
have a degree in computer studies but I cant get a fucking job
because of this fucking problem. I keep getting pressurised by the
people in the jobcentre to find a job, but I cant get one because of
my problem, I had one last Thursday it was terrible.

Unfortunately im still living at home because of this problem. My
father doesnt give a fuck and is happy I have this problem, my mother
keeps pretending that I dont have a problem ( because she cant deal
with it anymore) and keeps forcing me into situations which cause me
to humiliate myself.

I actually think i can beat it beacuse I meditate, but the thing is
im not being given time to to develop the skills to block the
thoughts, so either im going to die of a heart attack, or kill
myself.....im really,really,really fed up.

One last thing I realise that this may have turned into a physical
problem beacuse there have been times were I THOUGHT I had controlled
the problem, but the side-effect is till there. I have tried all
sorts of things to stop the side-effect but it still remains, if I
can reach a certain level of meditation and the problem still
persists then I know I need to see a doctor. But I know the root
cause has been a compulsion disorder thast started in 1998 ever since
then I have the side-effect, maybe I have had the problem for so long
that the side-effect still persists even when I control my thoughts.
Hope this makes sense.
