Because Glen developed a dvt after surgery he has been on warfarin and clexane
to try and get his blood to 'therapeutic levels'. They are wanting his level to
be between 2 and 2.5 and so far after 4 weeks of both medicine he has only
reached 2 once. He is on 15mg of the warfarin and 90 units of clexane (injected
twice daily). We were given a supply of clexane when he left hospital (2 weeks
today) and I rang our GP yesterday to ask about whether he needed to prescribe
more. He rang back today saying his levels are still at 1.7 so yes the clexane
is still needed as he was worried about too high a dose of warfarin (because of
the risk of an internal bleed). The kicker in this is that the clexane
injections for 3 days cost a whopping $146!!!!!!! Which is going to quickly ruin
us as we are struggling financially as it is. Has anyone had any experience of
this? Our GP had one days supply which he gave us free of charge, and has
written a letter for us to turn up to ED with in the morning, effectively asking
the hospital to supply it as we can't afford it.
Our week had been going so well until this, his bloods are really good and he is
handling the chemo/radiation well, plus we are getting some things in place to
keep him busy and supervised so that I can get some much needed space for me.
We were going to take an overnight trip up to Auckland to visit friends and were
really looking forward to it- now that is on hold until we can work out what we
do!
