Hi,

I wondered if our site may be of interest to this student group?

'h2cm' publicises a health and social care model with universal
potential. Originally created in the UK by Brian E Hodges -

Hodges' Health Career - Care Domains - Model [h2cm]

http://www.p-jones.demon.co.uk/

- can help map health, social care and other issues, problems AND
solutions. The model takes a situated and multi-contextual view across
four knowledge domains:

* Interpersonal;
* Sociological;
* Empirical;
* Political.

Our links pages cover each care (knowledge) domain e.g. Political:

Hello group, my name is Dan and I wish to share a new website,
www.nursegroups.com, that has launched to aid all nurses (and Student
Nurses!) in networking. Membership for the site is completely free &
always will be. There will never be any charge for anything, & it
offers increased networking functionality. Members can easily set up
their own profile, homepage, and personal blog, send private messages
and search for other members by location, profession, etc. As a
member, you can also start or join any number of different groups.
Members can post free classifieds & upcoming industry events, and all
members get their own personal calendar to keep track of it all.
There is also a live chat feature. It our hopes that nurses will
benefit from each other's presence, and that we can help increase the
networking flow among those in the field. Hope you enjoy the site!
Thank you for your time, we hope to see you at www.NurseGroups.com!

kris, ur from cali too!! can i ask you where you went to get ur lvn or
rn program or even if u got ur bsn from? i have been searching and i
dontknow where to find any...

also to those who had replied to my previous msg, i just want to thank
you all...believe me, you guys have helped me. also about the comment
someone made about not going into nursing just for the money, i'd like
to say that its not the money im doing this for, and the person who
said that if someone went into nursing for the money, then its not a
big deal or something like that, ur right! you know what, no one
really would want to become a nurse if all they have to do is dirty
work and getting paid nothing. i for one am going into nursing because
i get a sense of fulfilment when i help others, and alos when my
mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and leukemia, the only people
who i saw stand by her (other than us) were the nurses. they were by
her more than the doctors. unfortunatley, she did pass away 12 years
ago, and i still will never forget the people who were always by her
side.

I agree that cna's are grossly underpaid thats why we treat ours like royalty

as for why a nurse should or shouldnt go into the field, we all have our
opinions and I will leave it at that.

I agree completely that CNAs are valuable and that they are caring and

I don't necessarily agree with this statement: "If your true reason for

Many of our nurses would not be in the profession if it weren't for the
money. Let's not kid ourselves here. Of course, you have to like what
you do, at least a little bit, but come on!

There was a big brouhaha over this several months ago on this list (or
another list). It bugs me to no end when people criticize nurses
because one of their motivations for going into the profession was
needing a steady job with a good income. It's This doesn't mean that
they aren't caring people, or that they aren't good at their jobs.

As one of those who are definitely going into this for the money, I
truly resent comments such as that above. I don't want to work at
Wal-Mart, the only other option around here. This doesn't mean that I'm
not a good nurse or a caring person. But if nursing only paid $8.00 per
hour, I wouldn't be one. That's reality, folks.

First of all, let me apologize for the font of this message...I have meds in my
eyes and they are kind of blurry.

Let me comment on a few things:
CNA's.....

CNA's don't get the accolades they deserve. They do a lot of good work and work
very hard to help their patients. We have two CNA's that don't know it yet, but
we have set a fund that we put money in every paycheck. Come spring, they are
going to be surprised when we hand each one half their tuition for nursing
school. If you can afford to work at a CNA's salary and support yourself and
your family, it may be in your best interest to do so. This experience will give
you a chance to be in the hospital setting and observe what nurses and docs do.
Sometimes just being in the hospital/nursing home setting can make the decision
as to whether you want to be in this field. If you cant afford to be an CNA and
want to pursue ur license, thats ok too cause the first two to three weeks of
clinical you are doing CNA work anyway and if you are in a program like I was
in, everyday of clinical will be CNA and nursing combined.

Programs...

There are different avenues you can choose for your training. You can take the
college route with the end result being a BS in Nursing. You can choose the
junior college route with the end result being an LVN or RN license depending on
whether the college offers and RN transition. You could also look into the
technical schools. The problem you will run into with technical schools is that
there arent that many that offer an RN transition program. The good thing is
that These schools are sometimes in good with the colleges and have a good
relationship for their students to pursue the RN education at the school. Also,
with the technical schools, you dont have the prerequisites that the junior
colleges have BUT (there is always a but) if u seek to join their program, they
may make u acquire those prereq's. The best way to choose a program, is too talk
to nurses. If they work at a hospital, they more than likely have entertained
the nursing students from a few programs during clinicals
and preceptorship. They can tell you which program seemed more with it compared
to others. Also...if u know anyone that was in the hospital ask them about their
nursing experience and if they know the name of their nurse. Go to that nurse
and ask what program they graduated from. Most programs have a wall of honor at
their school, visit it and see if they graduate big classes or abnormally small
ones. Some where between 19 and 40 graduating students is average. You can also
call the school and ask how many students graduated or passed their NCLEX most
department heads will be more than happy to brag. You can also go the state
board of nursing and ask questions

The Big Decision.....
I think one of the things ppl whom are considering nursing school should do is
sit down and be completely honest with themselves as to why they want to pursue
nursing as a career. If your true reason for getting into the career is money
then I will tell you without hesitation that you need to look elsewhere. With
time, you will tire of the field and the money wont seem worth the requirements
of the job. Like a poster stated earlier...if u have a caring attitude and
truly love medicine and want to help ppl then give it shot. That's the whole
advantage to being a CNA. There are CNA programs wherein you are done in 4-6
months. Most programs have an interview process with there programs and there
are two questions that they will ask you. I havent heard of a program with an
interview process that havent asked them. Ppl that are in it for the money will
give a particular answer and usually dont get in.

I do agree with the poster about changing the path of ones future. If you have
to work at the local burger joint while you go to school that is fine. Just take
a look at your life and ask yourself is you want to be in your current situation
five years from now.

Look forward to comments...

MM

That would be great advice if a person could support themselves and
their family on a CNA salary. Around here, you can make more working at
McDonald's than you can as a CNA.

   I totally agree.

I am a CNA and I am taking everything with baby steps as I am a single

I am in LPN school now, and I am looking forward to RN school.

My biggest suggestion to anyone who want to be a nurse is to become a
CNA
first to "test" the waters and know exactly what you maybe getting
into.

I have found being a CNA has helped me a great deal in school because
the
RN's and LPN's help you to understand what you may be studying.

This may not be the case in all setting, but I work at a wonderful
hospital
which really pushes the staff to be the best they can be.

Unfortunately some people go into nursing just because you can make a VERY
good salary. They don't CARE about people/patients. They don't have the desire
to HELP people get through tough situations. Nursing is all about caring for
people. Yes, on occasion you do have to do dirty jobs but that's what helping
sick people is all about. You also get to work with doctors and RN's who are
trying to diagnose what the heck is really going on with someone and put a
great treatment (Rx) plan in place. Once you have the right Rx plan , you
begin to see that sick person get better and you know YOU were a part of making
that happen. Nursing is wonderful but its not easy. If you are a helper by
nature you are probably well suited. If you are doing it just to make money..
don't sign up!

In any case, if you do decide to start on this path try to dedicate yourself
to going on and becoming an RN... that's where you will really truly feel
like what you do matters. Your LVN will allow you to start working as a nurse
while you continue your education.

Good luck to you as you make your decision. If you would like to continue
chatting just email me again. I am a home care administrator and have worked as
a nurse for 35 years.

i am from cali...i know of 3 schools here for lvns, oh and by the
way i realized something...only california and texas use the
phrase "lvn," the rest use lpn. but back to what i was saying, yes
im from california and the school that i have chosen to go to is
called cni-career network institution. they are approved by the
board of vocational nursing and psychiatric techs, also they are
accredited byt the ABHES, and some other stuff...i have their
website, but it not a detailed one...here it it:
http://www.californianursingschool.com/ can someone go to it when
they have time and see if its good? i mean i know its up to me and
everything, but what do U guys think of it? oh and about it being
tough, i heard that too, but im not worried that much, because i
will be devoting all my time to this program. i just first want to
know about becoming a lvn, because i am not sure if this girl i was
talking to was trying to gross me out from the program or what, but
she told me that basically what lvns do are, they give old people
baths, clean poop/vomit off the floor and just dirty things like
that...i know that lvns have to do that sometimes if working with
older patients, but do the lvns only work with seniors? i thought we
could do pediatrics too and help the pediatricians... if anyone
knows more info pls post :)

thanks all!

LPN/LVN programs are generally a great start into nursing. Be careful about
the program you choose though. Accreditation is important. Most are 11 to 13
month programs. They are usually pretty tough. I recommend the Holden Health
Career/College program to people on the east coast. Where are you from?

Hello from Oklahoma. Here you have to work under Rn
but I worked in nursing home and Rn was just on call
at evening and night shifts. You have to be Rn to
Hang tranfusions but LPN can monitor and assess I
beleive. RN writes care plans also. Have been LPN for
eight years in Oklahoma new grads LPN or RN are in
demand check out your state employment office they can
probaboy give you some idea for your state also your
sate board may be able to help you.

LVN's administer care like an RN does except there are things that an RN can do
that an LVN can't do. On the floor, you work under and RN. The RN makes more
money than an LVN. Now I just graduated from an LVN program last summer. I had
heard rumors that LVN's were being phased out. Won't vouch for whether that is
true or not but I can tell you that I wanted to move to dallas and was shocked
at the fact that no one wanted to hire me. Now to there defense, I didnt have
any experience but the question I have for the healthcare organizations is
this....Why are you bitching about not having any nurses when you have all these
LVN's needing a job. IF you can find an RN program, it may be to your benefit to
just go that route and spare yourself the heartache unless you have a hook up
already. There are good days in nursing and bad days in nursing...it all evens
out.

If you have a practice CD (they come with NCLEX-review books), use those
to do practice questions. Review your weakest areas. Review your lab
values, so you know (at least approximately) the "normal" ranges. If
you have time, look over the main drugs for each system/condition, and
their main side effects. Also, you might want to look at approximate
dosages, and take note of any that are generally very small or very
large.

From what I understand it is an "up to date" news
scource of such. Some media outlets get leads from
blogs.

How healthly are your kids? Do they get 5-9 servings of veggies EVERYday? If
not, email me and I can explain how you can get those veggies into your kids for
FREE!!

This seems to be the norm for all the hospital I work.
(I am an agency aide/nursing student.) they do try
their best to get us to atleast lunch. It just those
darn lights, docs, med passes, etc won't wait for us
to take a break.
