I work at a level one trauma center in Dallas
Family conferences per se are on an ad hoc basis. And are usually the province
of the very ill/imminent death cases.
However twice a week we have "Trauma Rounds" at 10 am on Mon and Thurs where
all the major disciplines round on all trauma patients (Attending, head resident
on the case , nursing , RT, PT, OT, Phys Medicine, Rehab, Clergy, Social work,
Nutrition, PharmD, etc..) It's a great way to keep everyone updated and on the
same page. Aware of each others concerns, etc. At that time next of kin or
HIPPA surrogate are invited to be a part of the process and express any concerns
or question that they have.
Not only does it air concerns, but also shows the families the depth and number
of people concerned with the care that they never see.
