Saline is isotonic and should not effect the tissue, sterile water is hypotonic and if absorbed into the tissue would cause edema, IE when you sit in the tub...

Although many people have gotten away from this, anytime any one is intubated, or suctioned, it should be as aseptic as possible. NEVER use water to irrigate...
