Although many people have gotten away from this, anytime any one is intubated, or suctioned, it should be as aseptic as possible. NEVER use water to irrigate the ET Tube. Saline only. Actually we are not supposed to use saline for anything other than flushing the line. When I first became a nurse (when dirt was new) we used to flush with saline and then bag vigorously. This was supposed to mobilize secretions. Now we are not supposed to flush at all. Look at your hospital's policy. It should be clear cut. Just remember, if you have to go to court for anything, they are going to give you a copy of the policy.
If you do put anything down the tube (such as epinephrine in a code) make sure it is a sterile solution.
