Re: Disability

Thanks for your time and help. I also talked with my coworkers (one who has her
LNC certification). She said the trend in the market is for attorneys to hire
non-certified RN's to review charts for $30/hr as opposed to LNC for $100/hr. Do
you have any input on this? Kim T

In answer to your questions, I will send you some excerpts from my LNC paper and
the reference pages. These may help in your search and information gathering.
They will be sent to you privately, since most list members would not find the
info interesting. Several of the references are unique to my geographic area,
but I am sure you will be able to obtain similar data pertinent to where you
live.

Thank you for your time to reply. I did a Google search on LNC. The site I found
had a variance from $3,000-$8,000 to take their course to become certified. Is
certification necessary and is that the expected price range? Thanks, Kim T

Legal Nurse Consultants review charts for lawyers. Some are independents, and
some work as employees of law firms, insurance cos., or other businesses. As an
independent, you can work from home; however it does take time to build your
clientele, and the amount you earn is not guaranteed. There are several sites
on-line where you can obtain additional information.

From your post, it sounds like you have a good nursing background. No formal
schooling is required to become a LNC; but, the better prepared you are, the
easier it is to get started. Home study, on-line, formal classroom programs, and
seminar-type training sessions are available. Prices and time frames vary. There
are several associations--check to see what is available in your area, and you
can find that info on the net. Members who are actively engaged in the
profession can provide a wealth of information.

I recently completed a thorough research project on obtaining credentialing as a
LNC and establishing a practice for a course in my masters program. It was very
interesting. I took it to the point of interviewing local practicing LNCs and
attending some association meetings. The people were very open, welcoming, and
helpful. Interviews with physicians and lawyers provided other viewpoints, and
one person I spoke to held both MD and JD degrees.

You may want to check the local hospitals (especially the one where you work) to
see if their medical records, risk management, quality control, etc. departments
have such a position. What you want may be in your own backyard!

The telephone triage suggestion someone else made could be a viable alternative.
I know some companies have reps who work from home--a friend of mine back east
has such a position, and occasionally I have seen similar ads in the Sunday
help-wanted ads. By the way, check for ads for LNCs, you may find something of
interest.

Take care of yourself and good luck!

I have been a nurse for just shy of 20 years and the physical demands of 7 years
of Med/Surg and 12 years of ICU nursing has taken it's tole on my body. I do not
see myself lasting another even one more years, let alone 10. I am in the
process of pursuing a permanent disability claim. If it's granted, I would be no
longer able to work in my current job description and will be awarded anywhere
from 30 - 75% of my present income. Since I am single, I will need to find
supplemental income outside of the PERS system. My question is in 2 parts.
1.)Does anyone have experience or helpful hints for this process? 2.) I think I
would be interested and able to do medical chart reviews for an attorney's
office part time. I'm not sure where to start looking for that kind of a job.
What is that profession called?
Any other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, KimT
