Here in Atlanta, we have what we call a Resource RN. She is a critical care
RN that floats throughout the hospital with various duties, one of them
being responding to situations on the floor with deteriorating patients,
either helping stabilize them so they can stay on the floor, or caring for
them until the patient can be transferred to ICU. She also assists with
transporting critical care patients to CT, and meets the helicopter for
patients being transferred into one of our ICUs. We have an RT supervisor
that can be called to assist this RN if necessary. We are not a teaching
institution so having a resident participate is not an option.

> We are doing this as well. The model we are looking at is RN plus
respiratory tech. It's been tried in Vancouver, BC, versus the resident, RN,
RT model. Vancouver is having some success with the RN/RT model. So we'll
see what happens. I know here we will have to hire someone into the
positions without a patient assignment as the team could be away from the
bedside a considerable amount of time. It certainly is the buzz in critical
care now. It will be interesting to watch these teams develope. C.
