The vital capacity is maximized when the patient is standing. It is near
maximal point when the pt is sitting with appropriate use of accessory
muscles and coaching. It is greatly reduced when the patient is supine.
If the VC is necessary for evaluation on a supine patient, raise the
head of the bed to a full fowler's position if possible. You can use the
VC as a good trending tool as long as the patient is able to exert
maximal effort, so it does have some use in patients that can only be in
a supine position.

what happens to vital capacity when a person goes from standing to
sitting up to lying on the back?
