Lack of Fondness in Fond Du Lac
It used to be that the state of Wisconsin was home to
thousands of small dairy farms, each milking herds of
fewer than 100 cows.
One very large dairy farm in Fond Du Lac, currently
home to 700 cows on 100 acres, is about to expand 12-fold.
The three owners (farmers Ostrom, Vosters, and Willer)
are attempting to enlarge their operation from 7 cows
per acre to 83 cows per acre.
Their application for a wastewater permit will be the
subject of a public hearing on January 22, 2009
before the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
It has yet to be determined whether this new factory
farm application will receive the necessary variances
from current environmental laws.
My money is on the three farmers, who have $70
million to invest in this new project. Seventy million?
That's a lot of sour cream!
