Sometimes, It's the Little Things
I recently spoke to a young man who complained about
his constant congestion. I suggest that he give up
all milk and dairy products. He surprised me by
informing me that he had already done that.
"I've been a vegan for the past year. Now what do I do?
I was up all night coughing up phlegm. Any suggestions?"
I questioned him.
"What did you have for dinner?"
"A salad."
"Did it have croutons?"
"Yes."
"How about yesterday's breakfast, do you remember?"
"Just a chocolate chip muffin with a cup of coffee."
"And yesterday's business lunch?"
"I ate in an Italian restaurant. Pasta."
I then explained to him that the croutons were probably
made with dairy. I suggested that he check the label
for whey, casein, and other milk derivatives.
The chocolate bits on muffins are often made from milk
chocolate. Even his simple lunch contained dairy.
Parmesian cheese is one of the most powerful triggers
for histamine production and mucus.
Many people are not aware that chefs in Italian restaurants
often add Parmesan cheese to the pasta before the dish is
plated. The waiter then adds more at the table. I've dined
with well-known vegan writers who absentmindedly shake
their heads when the waiters approach with freshly grated
Parmesan.
Milk proteins affect everyone. Some people rarely notice
the subtle congesting results. Others suffer asthma
attacks.
Sometimes, it's the little things.
