Discovering Discover's Discovery

The March 22, 2007 issue of Discover magazine contains
an article suggesting that when the subject is autism,
"It's Not Just in the Head".

One recurring theme motivates the authors, who write:

"I can't think of it as a coincidence anymore that so
many autistic kids have a history of allergies, eczema,
or chronic diarrhea."

The Discover article does just that. It discovers a link
between (dairy) diet and autistic behavior. The authors write:

"Recommendations include dietary restriction, usually
eliminating gluten (present in wheat and other grains)
and dairy."

One mother is interviewed regarding her autistic son's treatment:

"For weeks after Kyle stopped drinking milk, he had welts all
over his body, as if he were going through a detoxification
reaction. At the same time, he had his first formed, regular
bowel movements. His sleep improved."

Past NotMilk columns have included dozens of links to dairy
consumption and autism.

The so-called healthiest organic milk from the healthiest cow
naturally contains an opiate that is similar in structure to
morphine. That hormone is called casomorphine.

Gee. Kids eat powerful steroid hormones with opiates for
breakfast and manifest out-of-control behavior by noon?
Why didn't I think of that?

Society's creative solution? Feed them more of those same
substances for lunch. Chocolate milk, macaroni and cheese,
pizza.
