Non-Dairy Turkey   Message List

Food regulators in the Ottoman Empire are as
deceptive as they are in the United States,
protecting manufacturers while turning their
backs on consumers, and that's no Istan-bull.

The Turkish Journal of Pediatrics
(2003 Apr-Jun;45(2):165-6) has taken note
of something that Americans have known
for many years. That is, the dairy industry
has been deceptive in its labeling and
marketing of milk and dairy products.

You may have seen their lies. Powdered
coffee creamers often contain this label
on the front of their package: "Non-Dairy."
Only after reading the Lilliputian printed
list of ingredients on the rear of the
package does one find the lie: "Sodium
Caseinate, a milk derivative."

A team of scientists in Turkey (Kocabas, et. al.)
determined that reaction to cow's milk proteins is one
of the most common food allergies prevalent during
childhood, and can often be lethal to certain kids
by causing anaphylactic reactions. They write:

"Cow's milk is found in a large variety of processed
foods but its presence may be hidden as it is occasionally
listed on the product label in an manner unrecognizable
to the consumer."

Unfortunately, their solution is equally deceptive.
They write:

"The parents of more sensitive patients need to be instructed
in the detection of these potential sources of hidden cow's
milk by judiciously reading food labels and in recognition
of the sources, thus avoiding possible untoward reactions."

What a convoluted approach. That's not the solution at all.
Food agencies (In America, USDA and FDA) should never
allow manufacturers to label foods containing dairy
as being "dairy-free." Could anything be simpler?

Parent feeding severely allergic children non-dairy
whipped cream may very well be treating their kids to
a deadly last meal.
