Re: [noonan_support] A few things

Hi there, sounds like our boys are in a similiar boat...Our son Henry is 29 months and is just starting to try and walk.  He has an OT, PT, and a Care Specialist who works on some language development, etc.  I stopped the feeding clinic as I believe that is one area where we are just going to let him go at his own pace.  So far as I have found, digestive issues are a big part of Noonan's kids...I believe the digestive tract is just underdeveloped (especially when they come out sooner than we expect!).  I highly recommend you not use any 'aid' to help him with his bowel movements.  From what I've read this will cause so many more issues later in his life that you can prevent now by not choosing this route.  AND I know what it is like to need sleep!  I was raised on and off in Europe where food(s) are used WAY more in our health care, and I have been using PROBIOTICS (Jarro makes one for infants/kids that you could find on-line, I'm sure, if not, you can email me back and I will send you the exact info).  Probiotics aid in the natural bacteria that your stomach/bowels need in order to function correctly...each time a child has any antibiotics (which Henry has had WAY too many since birth, surgeries, illnesses, etc.) the antibiotics strip the body of these needed healthy bacteria.  This is why, I believe, constipation is such an issue with Noonan kids.  You can find this Jarro powder at any health food store, it's inexpensive, super easy (a 1/4 tsp. mixed in with food) and IT WORKS naturally...without any side effects or harm later in life.  I also give my son lots of Greek style yogurt which is very high in both fat (healthy kind) and protein.  Although he doesn't gain tons of weight, this yogurt already has the healthy bacteria AND he LOVES IT!!!  Yogurt was one of the first 'signs' (I'm studying sign language) he learned...right after 'more' and 'momma'.  Henry now sleeps from 7:30pm until about 6:30am...he has his first bowel movement at around 8am (after breakfast...hot rice cereal with, of course, yogurt!).  Also, I know it's old school, but they make organic 'pruns and oatmeal' toddler puree (from Earths Best) that he loves and they really help with the regularity.  I hope you have luck with these ideas...I know it's easy to get turned off from everyone's 'miracle find' ...but this will help, it's cheap, and I think it will be the easiest on his body and yours as well!  Take care, Madeline

I am proud to say my son is finally taking steps unaided. Heck he is
almost 32 months old and I was beginning to think he would never walk.
We are working on speech too and he will start occupational therapy
soon. I know delays are common with NS and he had the double whammy of
being born 3 months early. Do NS kids ever catch up??

He is still slowly gaining weight and growing. Slowly!! Then again
most toddlers grow slowly anyway. Like a typical toddler he seems to
want to eat the same 4 foods over and over. I wish I could get him to
eat more in the way of fruits and veggies. The amount of food he eats -
wow he should weigh so much more!!!

I know that constipation is a problem for Noonan's children. I have a
question.... He has a 'habit' of having a bm in the morning. Problem
is that if he has a bm coming he wakes up every hour or so all night
long!!! I have resorted some nights to using a suppository to get him
to go so we can sleep. I know this is crazy but is there any way I can
train him to go late in the evening so his bowels are empty when he
goes to bed?? I have not slept in 32 months and it is taking a huge
toll on my health.

Maria
