Stan Watson plans to run in honor of his father, who had Parkinson's
disease. By William T. Martin / RN-T
[http://news.mywebpal.com/partners/680/images/news/ACF19D5.jpg] On Aug.
18, one day after his 50th birthday, Stan Watson plans to run 50 laps
around Barron Stadium to raise awareness for Parkinson's disease.
Watson lost his father, Homer Watson, to Parkinson's seven years
ago, and the run, which will start at 5 p.m., will be held in his honor.
Watson is asking for pledges of money for each lap he runs, with the
donations going to the Georgia Parkinson's Association. His personal
goal is to raise $10,000 for Parkinson's awareness. Watson says he
came up with the idea for a run because of how the disabling disease
affected his father. "I want to raise money for Parkinson's
disease so other people don't have to suffer like my dad did,"
he said. Watson worked with James Trussell, president of the Northwest
Georgia Parkinson's Disease Association, to make the idea for the
12½ mile run a reality. Watson hopes to raise funds for the
organization while also raising awareness within the community about the
disease. He said the most important thing people should know about
Parkinson's is that, if a relative has the disease, DNA tests can
determine if other family members have the gene that causes it. This
might be useful in preventing Parkinson's in the future, he said.
Donations to "The Run for the Cure" can be made starting today
at www.gaparkinsons.org <http://www.gaparkinsons.org/> , the Northwest
Georgia Parkinson's Disease Association Web site. Donations also
will be accepted at the Northwest Georgia Parkinson's Disease
Association chapter office located at 708 Glenn Milner Blvd., and other
locations throughout Rome.
