Differences between natural and surgical menopause (Friday, 04
November 2005)
Parkinson's disease is more common amongst men. This is believed to be
due to hormonal factors. For this reason American researchers studied
the association between postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy and
the risk of developing Parkinson's disease in 367 women. They found
that usage of hormones more than doubled the risk of developing the
disease in women who had had a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus)
independently of removal also of their ovaries, whereas there was no
increase in risk in women who had had a natural menopause.
