The Institute of Medicine in its monograph THE FUTURE OF THE PUBLIC'S HEALTH IN
THE 21ST CENTURY wrote summarizing research on page 59 "More egalitarian
societies (ie those with a less steep differential between the richest and the
poorest) have better average health."
The United States is less healthy by any measure than all the other rich
countries and a few poor ones, despite spending half of the world's health care
bill. This didn't always used to be the case. When we as a nation shared
more, we were healthier, compared to other counties.
Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times reporter, David Cay Johnston, has
looked at the various ways that the wealthy have enriched themselves while
most of us continue to struggle. His most recent book 'FREE LUNCH: How
the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense (and
Stick You with the Bill) tells how.
Johnston will deliver the Stephen Stewart Gloyd lecture INEQUALITY, THE VAST
MAJORITY AND HEALTH. on May 1 at 3:30 in Hogness Auditorium, A420 of the Health
Sciences Center at the University of Washington. Reception and book signing to
follow. All are welcome.
