Dear friends,
Please join us Friday evening, December 1st, 7:00 - 9:30 PM for:
“SOPHIE SCHOLL”
(…also see below for a few other events around town)
(** denotes change from previous announcements)
**Friday, DECEMBER 1, 2006, 7-9:30 PM
Film: “SOPHIE SCHOLL” (117 min, Marc Rothemund, 2005)
This is a true story. In 1943, while Nazi Germany was at its most fascist
and engaged in a two front world war in defense of the Fatherland, a small
group of university students (including the Scholl brother and sister, Hans
and Sophie), German soldiers back from the Russian front and various
"activists" formed the White Rose resistance movement. At risk to their
lives, they created a series of mimeographed leaflets that they distributed
all around the Third Reich. They wrote in blunt and idealist terms: they
demanded that the German people look at and recognize the war crimes and
crimes against humanity that their government and their military were
committing; they demanded that citizens emerge from their unconsciousness
and acknowledge their loss of freedom and human dignity; they urged the
German people to resist, sabotage and undermine both the war machine and the
propaganda of the Hitler government. The White Rose appealed to the higher
moral, ethical and religious sensibilities of Germany as contrasted with the
basest mass hysteria orchestrated by the Nazi regime.
The White Rose leaflets stated: We will not be silent! We are your bad
conscience! We will not leave you alone!
Sophie Scholl and her White Rose colleagues, many only between 20 - 30 years
old, were the subject of a nationwide manhunt by the Gestapo. Eventually,
they were betrayed to the secret police by a "good citizen" who caught them
in the act of spreading "anti-government" literature at
the University. Nearly all of the White Rose were eventually arrested.
They were interrogated, tried and guillotined within a matter of days after
secret trial. Records of their statements and their interrogation survived
the war, however, and these are the record for this movie. It is the story
of unflinching courage based on a commitment to the truth and to human
values, even when faced with the iron fist of totalitarianism, rigged laws,
social isolation, public ostracism and death. It is a story of
uncompromising principle tried by unprincipled power under the blade of
certain execution. It bears witness to our own times.
(Event is FREE and open to the public! ..but Donations are kindly accepted).
Friday, DECEMBER 8, 2006, 7-9:30 PM
Film: “THE CIRCLE” (91min, Jafar Panahi, 2000)
With filmmaker Abdi Sami, and Whitney & Jerry Neufeld-Kaiser who have
recently returned from Iran.
Banned in Iran, Jafar Panahi's THE CIRCLE is set almost entirely on the busy
streets of Tehran--a place where women are restricted by numerous laws,
including a repressive dress code. The beginning of the film focuses on two
women who have been given temporary leave from prison and have no intension
of returning. The film shifts from one woman to another as this eye-opening
tale circles back on itself. Their world is one of constant surveillance,
bureaucracy and age-old inequalities. But this stifling world cannot
extinguish the spirit, strength and courage of the circle of women. Iranian
cinema at its best and most politically aware.
"Shattering! Panahi weaves a sinuous spell that knocks you flat by the final
scene." - Jan Stuart, Newsday.
Including a facilitated discussion on Iran with Abdi Sami. Abdi is a
graduate of University of Southern California film school. He has worked in
the film industry for over twenty years and has consulted with a number of
non profits and NGOs.

is. The film features interviews with prominent individuals from all walks
of life including The Dalai Lama, Kofi Annan, and Bono; stories, portraits,
and vignettes of children, women, and men living with AIDS on four
continents; and breathtaking cinematography by Richard D. Young that
celebrates human dignity, even as it bears witness to immense human

Tuesday, December 7, 2006, 7:00 PM (and Dec 6th & 7th at 7:00 PM & 9:00 PM)
FILM: “ENCOUNTER POINT” (Ronit Avi, Julia Bacha, 2006)
Northwest Film Forum, 1515 12th Avenue (between Pike and Pine), Seattle
Directors will be present for a Q&A. Encounter Point tells the story of
several Israeli and Palestinian grassroots activists for peace and
reconciliation. The headlines we get from the Middle East show only the
hatred, the fear, the violence, highlighting voices of extremists on both
sides. Very seldom do we get the chance to hear from the many courageous
Palestinians and Israelis who are working together and in their own
communities towards reconciliation. This is simply a beautiful, touching
film. It does what no other documentary of its genre manages to do: it
reveals the complexities and nuances of the conflict while showing the
utmost respect and compassion for all of its Israeli and Palestinian
subjects.

THURSDAY NIGHT AT THE MEANINGFUL MOVIES: “THE GROUND TRUTH” (78 min,
Patricia Foulkrod, 2006)
BURIEN LIBRARY, 14700 6th Avenue SW, Burien
A new documentary about the war in Iraq featuring the voices of returned
Iraq Veterans. The terrible conflict in Iraq, depicted with ferocious
honesty in the film, is a prelude for the even more challenging battles
fought by the soldiers returning home – with personal demons, an
uncomprehending public, and an indifferent government. The Ground Truth is a
hard film to watch, especially for veterans and military families. We
suggest that veterans and military families ensure that they have support
during and after the film. Discussion will follow. (if parking lot is full,
the library requests that you park on the street or in the nearby church
parking lot). Sponsored by: Southend Neighbors for Peace and Justice.
