New Website on Human Rights Voting Records (fwd)   Message List

FYI. Amineh

Dear friends and allies for Social Justice,

The Seattle International Human Rights Coalition [SIHRC] has launched a
new website allowing voters to see how the incumbents have voted on
legislation affecting human rights and foreign policy from 2001 to the
present.

Voters will start receiving their absentee ballots for the Nov. 7th
General Election this Friday, Oct. 20th and we hope before then you can
spread the word through your email lists and to friends that a new
website exists to help review the candidates' positions on crucial issues
related to human rights.

SIHRC hopes to have an impact on how people vote in much the same way
that environmental, labor and GLBT groups such as SEAMEC have with heir
own report cards right here in Washington State. Voting records from
areas such as Military issues, National Security, Trade, and Immigration
have been researched and posted for concerned voters at this new website
– www.sihrc.org.

Senator Cantwell and Representatives Inslee, Larsen, Dicks, McDermott,
Reichert and Smith are all featured on the website as are their
challengers in these 7 key races. Although the challengers have no
official voting records, SIHRC both contacted them with a human
rights-related questionnaire and posted their answers or included their
statements on the issues from the public record. Letter grades have been
assigned to each candidate based upon their record or positions on human
rights issues. These grades, public statements and displayed summaries
of the legislation in question will allow local voters to compare the
candidates based on these focus areas.

No other resource, local or national, provides a way for voters to get to
the heart of how their Representative stands on crucial issues related to
human rights and to help us make a more informed choice when voting for
an official to speak and act on our behalf in the halls of Congress. SIHRC is
excited and gratified to be able to promote this website to our
allied organizations and voters and to provide to them just that type of
vital tool. We encourage you and hope you will help us promote this new
website to your membership soon through an email announcement or
otherwise.

Many Thanks!
