NIHAC Steering Committee meeting summary:
The NIHAC steering committee met October 2 to disucss the role NIHAC now
plays, or wants/needs to play, in the Seattle area. When NIHAC was formed
there was a dearth of events and gatherings related to international/
global health, but now there seem to be many opportunities. What other
role/s can we or should we play, if any?
Four possible 'value-added' functions were discussed, all based on the
NIHAC goal of facilitating discussion and activism around critical
international/global health issues in the Seattle area. For the moment
these seem to be important enough to warrant a continued existence of
NIHAC. The functions are are:
1) Disseminate relevant information on issues of current relevance to
global health, and opportunities for activism related to those issues.
Thus - we plan a greater use of the listserve, including the posting of
job opportunities.
2) Provide support as an organization for existing initiatives (eg,
petitions, sign-on letters) relevant to NIHAC goals
3) Cosponsor and publicize events planned by other groups that are relevant to
NIHAC goal
4) Continue to be available to provide a venue and sponsorship for events or
speakers that become available that are relevant to NIHAC goals (e.g., speaker
who come to the university and also want a community venue).
The steering committee welcomes ideas and other communication from members
of the listserve on what functions NIHAC serves, or could serve, for you.
We are also soliciting for additional members of the steering
committee. Please get in touch with one of the co-chairs with any comments
you might have, including suggestions for events or issues of interest.
