There's something happening in White Center on Saturday, September 30th
that you might be interested in. An exhibit of recent photo-journalism
from Iraq. These amazing photos were taken by an official Army
photojournalist; a fellow who simply wanted to let the camera lens tell
the story.
Dispatches from the War:
An Army Photojournalist's
Year in Iraq
Saturday September 30, 2006 at 6 p.m. Café Rozella
Jan David Critchfield, photojournalist with the Army, assigned to Iraq,
presents a slide-show, photographic exhibit and talk of his year-long
experience and what he saw and captured on film while on duty as a U.S.
Army photojournalist in Iraq.
Jan David Critchfield was born and raised in Seattle, Washington near
Greenlake. He attended Nathan Hale High School, where photography was the
only subject that caught his interest. He enlisted in the Washington
National Guard when he turned 17, determined to capture images like his
heroes--Robert Capa and James Nachtwey. That desire was fulfilled when
the United States invaded Iraq in 2003. His unit, the 122nd Mobile Public
Affairs Detachment, was attached to the 1st Cavalry Division and spread
across Baghdad. Over the course of a year, Specialist Critchfield shot
thousands of images and wrote scores of stories--mostly about humanitarian
aid missions due to an editorial effort to balance the 'bad' news coming
out of the country. Since returning home, he has, like many veterans,
struggled with the rawness of the experience, and it's juxtaposition with
'normal' life.
