International Honors Program
Job Announcement
Traveling Faculty in Health and Community
The International Honors Program (IHP) in affiliation with Boston
University offers a series of international comparative study abroad
programs. We are currently seeking 2 individuals to join an
interdisciplinary team of faculty and host country coordinators for "IHP
Health and Community," a four month long program that will take up to 30
students from upper tier liberal arts colleges and universities to India,
China, and South Africa. The Spring 2007 program begins in Boston in
mid-January and ends in Cape Town in mid-May.
The program is designed for students who are interested in considering the
complex issues of health care on a global scale. The courses will create
a framework for understanding systems that impact health on local,
national, historic and international levels. This perspective will allow
future leaders in the field to ask appropriate questions, and to set
priorities for providing care -- now and for the next generation, for
ourselves and in collaboration with local and international neighbors.
The program is made up of a series of complementary formal courses, home
stays, guest lectures, site visits, and meetings with NGOs, neighborhood
organizations and community activists. Faculty are needed for two of our
four courses:
" Globalization and Health: The Influence of Economic, Political,
and Social Forces
" Stuff of Life: Biology, Behavior, Health, and Society
(combination of clinical and public health and/or social science expertise
preferred)
The ideal candidate should: a.) have a Ph.D. (or MD/MPH equivalent) in a
relevant topic area and experience teaching at the college level; b) be
able to teach at least one of the above two courses in addition to be a
team teacher for a field methods course; c) have research/consulting
experience with health issues in some part of the developing world
(specific experience in South Africa, India, China desired, but not
required); d.) possess not only the appropriate technical skills to manage
a field course, but the sensibilities (flexibility, adaptability,
collegiality, cultural sensitivity, etc.) necessary for such an endeavor.
