An interesting use of email and internet over the past few years has been
organizing political opinion and action, by both the left and the right.
Here is an example of a recent effort by some in this country who oppose a
wide range of policies of the Bush administration to organize a
demonstration against them on Nov 2, as well as other related activities.

An Appeal to Scientists from Seattle World Can’t Wait –Drive Out the Bush
Regime

We are writing to you on behalf of the Seattle Chapter of the World Can’t
Wait (WCW). As signers of the statement sponsored by Union of Concerned
Scientists on “Restoring Scientific Integrity’, we want to appeal to you
to take up the call from World Can’t Wait (attached) to play a part in
mass opposition on Nov. 2nd to the whole agenda of the Bush regime. Nov.
2nd must be the day we look back on and say- “that was the day a movement
started that marked the beginning of the end of the Bush regime”

As the WCW call states- “The Bush regime is setting out to radically
remake society very quickly, in a fascist way, and for generations to
come.” They are prosecuting a murderous war based on lies, engaging in
open torture and justifying it, step by step eliminating the separation of
church and state and moving quickly toward a theocracy, and attacking
abortion.

And under Bush, scientific research is being suppressed and critical
thought itself attacked and undermined. We now have a president who openly
backs the teaching of intelligent design as science, who has sought to
obfuscate and cover up the reality of scientific research regarding global
warming, who’s policy regarding stem cell research is based on
fundamentalist and know-nothing religious principles, who has conducted
the massive expansion of oil drilling, exploration and burning of fossil
fuels, and who’s environmental policy has been to make war on the
environment.

The movement beginning Nov. 2nd truly has the ability to provide a vehicle
which has been non-existent, to mobilize the disgust and outrage of
millions of people to stand up, resist and begin to change the course of
history.

We must face the reality that there are no saviors to be found coming from
the Democratic party, that the pendulum is not going to magically “swing
back” and that all that will prevent this regime from rolling forward is
the independent and determined resistance of millions of ordinary people.

This regime doesn’t care about public opinion. Their response to
roadblocks is to step on the gas.

In just the last month:

*By delaying a House vote for 40 minutes while House republican leaders
including Tom Delay who had already been indicted twisted arms, the House
passed legislation that as Democracy Now stated, “will streamline
government permits for refineries, open federal lands for future refinery
construction, weaken environmental protections, and offer subsidies to
build refineries even though oil companies are making record profits..”

*In Harrisburg Pennsylvania- a court battle is going on that essentially
is re-fighting the famous “Scopes monkey trial” in 1925, to decide if
intelligent design will be given a hearing in school science classes
alongside evolution!

*After all the opposition raised after the deaths of so many in new
Orleans about the government allowing so many people to die while billions
are spent in killing people in Iraq, Bush won Senate approval for $50
billion more for the war in Iraq by a 97-0 vote. Then, Bush advocated as
the solution the military step up it’s role in relation to natural
disasters, including the possible quarantining of sections of the country
in the event of an outbreak of Avian flu.

People who believe they are on a mission from God and steal elections will
not go without a fight!

But as the Call for World Can’t Wait says-
"Silence and paralysis are NOT acceptable. That which you will not
resist and mobilize to stop, you will learn - or be forced - to accept."

In just the last couple weeks, World Can’t Wait has received national
exposure on Air America- generating hundreds of calls and emails. New
chapters are springing up everywhere, important new prominent endorsers
such as Cindy Sheehan have signed on, and a commission featuring
internationally known figures has been held in New York City
investigating the crimes against humanity of the Bush regime.

Momentum is building but much more is required if we are to truly have a
chance of creating the kind of movement the situation requires.

We are urgently asking you to do all you can NOW to make this effort a
reality.

We are asking you:
* To use the platforms you have in this society to lend support to
this movement, to spread the word on the media, in your communities
and organizations, to talk it up and plan to be part of November 2nd.

* To use the access you have to help us get to the most prominent
people in society.

* To put your signatures on to the Call for November 2, now.

*to organize processions for Nov. 2nd of scientists, technicians, and
medical staff wearing lab coats to speak out against the whole Bush agenda
and in defense of science (Seattle convergence- 11AM Westlake Mall Nov.
2nd)

* Please donate urgently needed funds to:
