Why we can't make effective interventions work in reducing child mortality?
United Nations Association Seattle program
NIHAC is pleased to be a co-sponsor of a program at 7:00 pm, Monday,
October 24th on reducing global child mortality. The event is being
organized in celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of
the United Nations. It will be held in the West Ballroom, second floor of
the Husky Union Building (The HUB) at the University of Washington.
The speaker for this program will be Dr. Steve Gloyd, professor and director
of UW's International Health Program. A panel of professionals will respond
to Dr. Gloyd's presentation and there will be time for questions and answers.
Our Governor, Christine Gregoire, will issue a proclamation, and Senator Patty
Murray is the Honorary Chair for this event. Dessert will be served at the
beginning of the program.
In September 2000, all United Nations member states (189 at the time) pledged
to focus national and international agendas on the eight goals that seek to
improve global development levels by 2015. Millennium Development Goal #4
states: "Reduce Child Mortality: Reduce by three quarters the mortality rate
among children under five by 2015." Nearly 11 million children under the age of
5
die every year, and over 50 percent of these deaths are related to
malnutrition and about 41 percent occur in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The admission fee for the program will be $100 for patrons, $30 for adults,
$20 for fixed income persons and $12 for students. Please be advised that the
HUB does not allow ticket sales at the door, hence attendees need to RSVP by
October 17 and make payment for their admission to United Nations Association
Seattle at P.O. Box 85682, Seattle, WA 98145-1682.
