Health Professionals Speak Out against Torture
In recent weeks, over 900 physicians, psychologists, nurses, and other health
professionals from across the United States have signed the US Health
Professionals’ Call to Prevent Torture, asserting their ethical commitment to
preventing torture and to prohibiting health professional complicity in abuse.
This growing collective statement, initiated by PHR, follows new revelations,
including a recent government report acknowledging the authorized use of
inhumane interrogation techniques against detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Another
government report issued by the Surgeon General of the US Army acknowledged the
involvement of psychologists and psychiatrists in designing and monitoring
interrogations, including help in deciding “when to push or not push harder in
pursuit of intelligence information.”
