The announcement below is from inSPIRE member Adrienne Ross:
Post 9/11: The Tension Between Security and Civil Liberties
USA Patriot Act Panel Discussion
Monday September 12, 2005 at 7:00 p.m.
Four years and one day after the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, the
Anti-Defamation League (ADL) of the Pacific Northwest Region will host a
panel discussion on the USA Patriot Act and its renewal. This important
piece of legislation passed with little or no public discussion within the
weeks after 9/11 with some sunset provisions but is now being made
permanent.
The panel will consider these questions: Are we more secure as a result of
the passage of The Patriot Act and at what cost to our civil liberties? What
is the proper balance between security and civil liberties?
In considering where the balance should be set for the USA Patriot Act in
2005 and beyond, the panelists are expected to discuss impact on both
security and civil liberties of some of the Act's most controversial
provisions and whether they should be renewed.
The forum, "Post 9/11: The Tension Between Security and Civil Liberties"
will be held Monday September 12, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at The Seattle First
United Methodist Church at 811 Fifth Avenue in downtown Seattle.
The forum will be moderated by U.S. Federal District Court Judge John
Coughenour. Panelists will include ACLU Board Member Jesse Wing, an attorney
at Seattle's McDonald, Hogue and Bayless; American Muslims of Puget Sound
President Jeff Siddiqui; former FBI Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's
Seattle Office Charles Mandigo; and Robert Jacobs, Regional Director of the
Pacific Northwest Region of the Anti-Defamation League.
"We're excited to be putting on this panel because the balance between civil
liberties, our freedoms, and the need to protect our citizens from physical
threat is critical. An uninformed public will too often choose security over
the Bill of Rights, and that could be more threatening to our way of life
than the terrorists themselves," said Robert Jacobs, Regional Director of
the Pacific Northwest ADL and one of the evening's panelists.
This event is free and open to the public. Call 206-448-5349 x4 for more
information.
Joining host Anti-Defamation League, event cosponsors include: The American
Civil Liberties Union, HateFree Zone of Washington State, the American
Muslims of Puget Sound, the National Council of Jewish Women, The Seattle
First United Methodist Church, the American Jewish Committee and the
American Jewish Congress.
