The steering committee met on April 30. The following is a summary of the
meeting notes:
1. Next NIHAC meeting is May 21, Room 733 T Wing, Health Sciences
Kevin Danaher from Global Exchange in San Francisco will be speaking on
Globalization and Health. He was last in Seattle 2 years ago and spoke to a
packed house at Kane Hall!
Pot luck will start at 6:15 followed by the talk and discussion at 7pm
All are welcome. More info to follow
2.NIHAC is interested in linking with a public health or health care
professional organization in Iraq. We hope to find out what Iraqi public health
and health care professionals might need in terms of support. We hope to engage
in some fund raising activities around this linkage. If you have any ideas or
contacts about how to make such a linkage work or if you would like to join us
in organizing such a linkage please contact ddenno@... or
brivin@...
We hope to have a NIHAC meeting on the above mentioned topic sometime in early
summer.
3.Julie Wallace who was on the steering committee has moved to Wash DC for a
Child Survival Fellowship. We will miss Julie!
Amineh Ayyad has volunteered to join us and we welcome her to the steering
committee! As you may recall, she led the last NIHAC meeting with an insightful
and informative presentation about public health in Palestine. Her presentation
was particularly helpful in understanding the role of Internationals in bearing
witness to events in the region.
4.There was a discussion about the volume (or lack thereof) of emails on the
NIHAC listserve. The steering committee has often been reluctant to send out
many emails to the listserve in case many NIHACers are on the International
Health Program or other similar listserves which have very active postings.
But, we recognize that there are quite a few NIHACers who are not on such lists
and would like to receive some informative emails on subjects that NIHAC has
been involved in. So, we are going to occasionally forward emails that pertain
directly to topics that NIHAC has been involved in (examples include E Timor,
Iraq, local health care access issues). If you have info to share with the
group, email it to the NIHAC email address and the steering committee will
receive and forward it if it does pertain to a topic NIHAC has been involved in.
If you have any comments on the above please contact a member of the steering
committee.
5.If you have any ideas for future meetings please contact a member of the
steering committee.
