Subject: File - 11. Feared Words
ncsfe@yahoogroups.com
Send Email Send Email

When your scanner sees a feared word coming in midsentence it is invariably a
multi-syllable word.
Immediately see that word in your mind's eye as appearing in a dictionary. In
the dictionary, all muti-syllable words are broken apart by dashes or dots to
indicate the syllabification of the word. Say that feared word as if you were
looking at a dictionary and seeing the syllables broken apart. Remember, the
fear wants to make you go unconscious. It wants to make you go on automatic.
But what you automatically do is wrong. It has kept you stuttering. Instead,
go up to the word, stop, say only the FIRST SYLLABLE and then, having heard it,
give yourself permission to say the rest of the word as if you were, again,
reading it out of the dictionary. Say that feared word very softly to lower the
air pressure under your vocal cords. Put a smile on your face as you say that
feared word. Fear is encoded in part by mouth posture and a smile is somewhat
incompatible with a fear response.

So, to sum up:

1. Say the feared word as if reading it from a dictionary.
2. Say the feared word very softly.
3. Put a smile on your face as you say it.

Practice this with friends and family and then on the phone. Have a monitor
present to help you determine whether you are putting the 3 above practices in
effect. When you stutter, it is generally true that you have neglected some
aspect of technique.

I, gave my humorous speech on Tuesday. I, did not win or advance and a
little disappointed. I, was disqualified because it took too long to
give.

I gave my best speech at any Toastmasters meeting or any place. I, am
really happy with my speech. It, had emotion a lot more vocal variety
and everyone liked it. I, talked to a bunch of members after the
meeting and they loved it. So, I did WIN! I, WON A PRIZE for myself
and anyone else who was scared to try. I, look forward to improving
and competing in the international speech contest next year.

Andrew, Greenstein's humorous speech contest is next Wednesday. :)

** I, added a few more videos to my web site **
** I, will be adding my humorous speech contest and Andrew Greenstein's
speech in the next week **

Hi Group,

I just ordered the device, after trying out the fluency master for
about a week and having what appeared to be immediate success
deteriorate once the "distraction" wore off.

I have been to Dr. Schwartz's airflow course (96) and Hollins
Communications, but can't find a way to beat stuttering in stressful
situations. Am pretty good on the phone, one on one, etc, but public
speaking can be quite challenging. Vast improvement overall since
1996 and the airflow days. In any event, any advice or words of
wisdom would be appreciated.

I hope this makes as much sense to all or some of you as it does now to
me...

There are really only two ways we can approach anyone/any situation in
life.. [whether we're fluent, stutterers, former stutterers, etc;].. We
can approach with love.. or with fear.. either is always present.. When
you truly approach with love, no 'harm' can come...and there is no
fear...Love within..and love for the person to whom you are speaking.
Learning to accept yourself unconditionally, approve of yourself
unconditionally, and love yourself unconditionally are pivotal.

Hi Everyone,

Just an update. Yesterday I was busy and not home most of the night
so tonight I called 6 places and I did pretty well. I have tried to
shorten my education and demonstration as much as possible with still
getting the main parts in.

My favorite is when I get a phone call and they say "what are you doing?" And I
say "practicing on my speech" it just gets right to it and there is no turning
back from the conversation (especially if you have not Educated & Demonstrated
them). They always ask "What do you mean?"

Yes I agree - the word "stuttering" (@ least for me) carries LOTS of emotion. I
now say things like "oops I let my cords lock a bit" or "whoa I scanned and bit
and almost hit my threshold".

I'm now sooo in tuned with how people speak I caught my wife saying 2 slowed
first word sentences in a paragraph. Jokingly I said "hey did your use
technique", she came back rather quickly and said "everyone does that when they
talk". Funny!

Way to go, Kari..
If it helps, these R the words I used when edu/demo'ing to car rental
agencies on the phone [technically, it's just a demo/not an edu--due
to the constraints]

"Hi, I'd like to book a car in ___city..but before you ask me all of
the necessary questions.. I just need to let you know.. that I have
to make sure I say the first word of each sentence slowly and softly -
-- cuz it's a technique I'm using to overcome a stuttering problem"
[sometimes I CHUCKLE** and add "so lemme know if I mess up, OK?"]

The above script is done w/ lots of enthusiasm and/or friendliness--
spoken NOT as though it's a problem or issue--but as though I'm
having fun w/ it..

[In retrospect, some of the "self talk" in it may be a little too
focused on stuttering--but in the beginning, I think it should work
very well for u !-- You'll start to see how INSIGNIFICANT stuttering
is to the world..as it should be to you too, eventually !]

Hi Fellow Fluency Enhancers,

I just wanted to let everyone know that to get myself back into the
practice mode I will be calling 3 toll-free numbers a night for a week
to educate and demonstrate and to keep me on track I will be posting
to let everyone know how it is going.

Tonight I called 3 car rental agencies and it went pretty well. I
only had a couple of unnoticable blocks on the phone and I educated
and demonstrated very well and the people on the other line didn't
seem to mind at all.

Thanks for the support.

Edu/demo will relieve the base level tension.
Keep in mind that MOST people are a little more "anxious" in those
situations- -you are HUMAN- -it is OK...
But re: STUTTERING in those situations.. Remember, they are not doing
it to you.. They aren't making you stutter.. You're allowing it to
happen.. YOU are making YOU stutter in those few situations...
Would you feel differently if you didn't CARE so much about
stuttering and being "perfect" with your speech?
What if, instead of stuttering, you just occassionally said the wrong
word.. That wouldn't bother you, right ? So why does it matter if you
stutter? When it doesn't matter, it will become a non-issue... You
know how to use technique.. Focus on the solution, the technique--
Not the problem, the stuttering.. When you say "I still have a
problem in this situation" you CREATE the problem for yourself.. The
problem is not in that room.. the problem is in Andrew's mind...
Change yourself talk drastically to be "I speak fluently to people I
meet" or something like that--over and over..all day..even if you
don't believe it at first.. When a contrasting thought pops in to
your head [listen in CLOSELY..some are sneaky !] say "STOP"--and
replace it w/ your new thought.. The brain creates whatever reality
YOU program.. It has no other choice... If you are armed w/ positive
thinking AND technique, you'll be where you wanna be

I cannot recommend these two books strongly enough [probably only need
TITLE to find 'em on amazon]

"WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU TALK TO YOURSELF"
and
"BEYOND NEGATIVE THINKING"

Kari,
I left ya a message.. you can call me anytime today!
What do you mean by 'off the practice bandwagon' ? you mean you're not
using technique and/or stuttering? or you're just not sitting down and
doing a strict exercise/practice regimen each day? If it's just the
latter.. that's OK -- don't be hard on yourself! Somewhere between the
1 and 2 year mark, I'm sure it's safe to slow down on how often you sit
there w/ the FE practicing.. As long as your technique is automatic and
always there w/ you.. YOu probably only need to do formal practice once
in a blue moon to prevent "slippage of conditioning" as Dr. S. wrote in
the manual.. In retrospect, I find--that once u know technique- -If you
kee practicing it for 20-60 min a day by reading w/ the FE-- you're
actually drawing attention to your speech everyday--and reminding
yourself you have something to work on--and, eventually, you need to
start letitng go... forgetting.. moving past it...
BUT-- if you're speech is slipping--and yer not using technique-- then
THAT's another story : )

Congratulations, Andrew.
Make yourself a general goal for year #2.
For example, after my first year-- I remember realizing.. I needed to
really make myself educate/demonstrate to the world-- I had shied
away from it during the first year--except for people very close to
me.....So that 2nd year.. I spent the first 3 months---edu/demoing
hundreds of people I hardly knew..and, ultimately-- being comfortable
enough to do a speech w/ content like "Look at Me Now"
You're already way ahead of that.. You did the edu/demo mania in the
first year..
I know my goal for year #3-- involves less concern over
speech..detatching myself from it.. knowing "there is life after
technique"--not counting blocks..not paying attention to them.. just
speaking w/out concern--and having no psychological issues w/
stuttering or perfectionism..
Applied to yourself, you might look to begin breaking away in the
next 12 months too.. Deep down, you know what to do... You know it's
pretty simple.. You have a 12 month track record to go by...You no
longer need the identity of the guy overcoming stuttering who needs
support.. "Stuttering was so last year"-- Start to move forward
now..and put stuttering behind you..
Imagine where you'll be a year from now-- It's not about the fluency
any more..but the peace of mind.
Congratulations,
Androoooooo

"Look at me now!" :)

I remember a year ago being unemployed having no money and deciding
whether purchase the FE. I remember thinking or having hope that
maybe the FE was the answer I was looking for. I am so thankful for
Andrew Greenstein, Steve Mulder and especially Dr. Schwartz for
putting me on the path. They are the ones that I contacted before I
decided to purchase the FE. Without them, I am not sure where I
would be at this point.

I have come from stuttering on every third word or major blocks on
words to being able to give speeches at Toastmasters, discuss
stuttering openly and made so many friends in the process. Everyone
I have spoke too has helped me push through bad times and good
times. They have been there to lend an ear and listen and offer
advice to push me through and get me to this point. I want to thank
ED Davis, Andrew Greenstein, Steve Mulder, Nick, Craig Williams,
Craig Samuels, Kari and especially DR SCHWARTZ!!!! and anyone else
who been there to talk. These people, especially Andrew Greenstein
have been there, any time, I needed help or needed advice. Thanks.

I still have a ways to go, and need to continue each day pushing
through new experiences and doing exercises. I have made more
progress than I ever envisioned possible. There have been bad times
and good times, but each time I slip I learned what I did wrong or
why and learned to improve.

I am preparing for my four speech at Toastmasters this week. Look at
that alone. Before that, I was scared to death of speeching now I
look forward to every opportunity I get. It is the biggest change I
can look at and am so glad I meet everyone in person in New York last
year or spending time with Andrew Greenstein's wonderful family.

I sure I missed something, but everyone can get to this point.
Continue to practice, call members, and do practice. You need to
continue to push forward and do not let anyone stop you in the
process.

Thanks :)

Andrew

Congrats Andrew! I remember the first voicemail you left me and how
much you stuttered, I can also remember the last conversation we had
and you were 99% fluent - you really have come A LONG way in a
realitively short time. Don't forget a very important part of
recovery is the way you think as well as using a physical technique -
I recommend reading the "Brain Game" that is attached to
masterstuttering.com if you have not done so - it has really opened
my mind to what I think of and how I associate myself to stuttering.
It's amazing what you can find you are telling yourself when you stop
and listen, then you can change it and start on a completely new path
that YOU choose. I realized I chose to let my vocal chords lock and I
chose to have problems on Ts, Ds, Cs, Ms & Ns. In the past & even
with a viable vocal chord relaxing technique I literally told myself
and accepted that I would have problems on these words. I've lowered
the tension on my vocal chords (base level
tension) just by changing my thoughts and the way I think, which
enables me to speak even more fluently and more care free. Amazing.

That is one of my last things I need to work on. The way I think
around strangers using technique. I feel the difference when I am at
work and talking to people who do not know me. It is like talking in
a room fill with people there is more tension then me alone on the
phone chatting with someone. I know why and need to do EDU/DEMO and
release the what I am feeling toward stuttering. Just open up and
remove the feeling toward stuttering.

masterstuttering.com does not exist?

You need to
continue to push forward and do not let anyone stop you in the
process.

Thanks :)

Andrew

Brilliant analogy Andrew - that one hit me square between the eyes... and got lodged in my brain.

When you're on an airplane...and there's turbulence, you listen
really closely to the tone of the pilot..and he keeps you at ease,
right?
The pilot calmly says something along the lines of:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, we are experiencing a few bumps.. We're gonna
take it up to a different altitude and see if we can smooth it out
for you a bit.. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight..."

You're at ease. Your BLT is low..

Now, what if, instead, the pilot exclaimed:

"WHOA !! DID YA FEEL THAT ONE ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!"

You'd be tense, anxious...and NErrrvous!!!

So.. as pilots of our own smooth speech.. Why do we so often react to
blocks or near blocks like the pilot exclaiming "WHOA !DID YA FEEL
THAT ONE ?!!?" Think of how much lower we could keep our BLT and our
ability to control and fly the plane smoothly if we reacted
with "Oops. I experienced a bump in my speech.. I'm gonna slow down
and soften a bit more..and see if I can smooth it out... Relax..enjoy"
