For the 15th Consecutive Year, Collegiate EMS Providers Convene to
Share Ideas and Enhance the Safety and Health of their Campuses!

Philadelphia, PA - The fifteenth annual conference of the National
Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation (NCEMSF) was held
February 29-March 2, 2008 in Philadelphia, PA. 797 representatives of
campus EMS organizations from 86 schools across the U.S. and Canada
attended the conference, hosted in conjunction with University of
Pennsylvania Medical Emergency Response Team, Rowan University EMS,
and Villanova EMS.

NCEMSF is a non-profit professional organization committed to
scholarship, research and consultancy activities and to creating a
safer, healthier environment on college and university campuses.
Comprised of over 225 college campus based emergency medical service
(EMS) agencies trained to respond within minutes and provide care
tailored specifically to campus emergencies, NCEMSF's purpose is to
support, promote, and advocate EMS on college and university campuses
nationwide. The annual conference provides a forum for communication
and creates an environment where ideas can be exchanged and problems
can be solved.

"This year marked the Foundation's 15th Anniversary and was the
largest gathering of collegiate EMS providers to date in terms of the
number of attendees and the number of schools represented," said Dr.
Scott Savett, NCEMSF Vice President and Chief Technology Officer.
"Collegiate EMS organizations from across the country were able to
share information on how to implement or improve campus EMS at their
school. While we have a lot of online interaction throughout the year, being
able to ask so many people very specific questions about campus EMS
operations in person is a huge benefit."

"In addition to providing for the acquisition of medical knowledge,
campus based EMS allows student participants to develop certain life
skills including leadership, communication, and decision making while
simultaneously positively impacting other people's lives," said Dr.
George Koenig, NCEMSF President. "What is most impressive about
campus based EMS is that much of this service is provided primarily
by students attending those colleges and universities. It is students
helping fellow students."

This year's conference seminars included over 54 lectures packed into
two days ranging from the treatment and management of various
traumatic and medical emergencies to EMS research to leadership and
strategic planning for the collegiate EMS agency. Other lectures
discussed member selection, revenue streams and public access
defibrillation. A series of roundtable discussions took place in
which leaders from various university squads reviewed common problems
facing their squads and challenged themselves to find feasible
solutions. The conference also featured an airway skills lab, EMS
bike maintenance workshop, campus administrators panel, and life
after collegiate EMS discussion panel. Campus EMS volunteers from
Virginia Tech also shared their reflections and lessons learned from
the tragic events that took place on their campus April 16, 2007. An
official NCEMSF commendation was issued to the Virginia Tech Rescue
Squad at the annual awards ceremony as well.

The first of two general session keynote lectures, "Air Medical
Services and Collegiate EMS," was delivered by Jeffrey Lubin, MD,
MPH, Director of EMS and Critical Care Transport for University
Hospitals Case Western Reserve Medical Center and and medical
director for CaseEMS as well as former Cornell University EMS squad
member. David Jaslow, MD, MPH, Director of the Division of EMS and
Disaster Medicine within the Department of Emergency Medicine at
Albert Einstein Medical Center and former PennState EMS member,
delivered the NAEMT sponsored keynote address "WMD Competencies: Can
Anyone Tell Me What to Do?"

The Richard W. Vomacka Student Speaker Competition afforded pre-
selected conference attendees the opportunity to deliver a 50-minute
presentation on a collegiate EMS topic of their choosing. Andrew
Harris from the Rochester Institute of Technology won the competition with a
seminar entitled "Strategic Planning for the Collegiate EMS Agency"

Several individuals and campus EMS organizations were recognized at
the conference with annual awards for service. They include:
* Collegiate EMS Advisor of the Year - Constance Richards, Ed.D, RN
(Saint Anselm College)
* Collegiate EMS Provider of the Year - Shad Ahmed (University of Rhode Island)
* Collegiate EMS Organization of the Year - Tulane University
* Collegiate EMS Web Site of the Year - The George Washington University
* Collegiate EMS Video of the Year - Emory University

Several universities received special recognition in honor of their
milestone anniversaries:
* Brown University - 30 years
* Brandeis University - 25 years
* Emory University - 15 years
* SUNY Potsdam - 15 years
* Juniata College - 10 years

Six schools were also recognized for the outstanding quality of their
EMS organizations with the NCEMSF "Striving for Excellence in Campus
EMS" award.

Texas A&M placed first in the annual Collegiate EMS skills
competition (sponsored by Medtronic - Emergency Response Systems) in
which team's clinical, leadership and creativity skills were tested.
Georgetown University finished second, and Ryerson University rounded
out the top three at third. The scenarios replicated medical, trauma
and rescue situations with an emphasis on the college environment.
Binghamton University won the Advanced Life Support (ALS) competition
for the fourth year in a row.

For more information about NCEMSF or the 2008 Conference, including a
copy of the complete program, please visit the Foundation´s website
at www.ncemsf.org. The 2009 NCEMSF conference is scheduled for late
February 2009- location to be determined (RFP available online).

Included in this update:
1) END OF REGULAR REGISTRATION
2) HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS
3) AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION
4) AWARDS PROGRAM
5) MEDTRONIC EMS SKILLS COMPETITION
6) POST CONFERENCE DISASTER COURSE - BDLS

The 15th Annual NCEMSF Conference is less then two weeks away and
plans are set for what promises to be an outstanding weekend!

1) END OF REGULAR REGISTRATION:
If you have not already done so, register and pay today before rates
increase again on February 23rd. Join the over 725 collegiate EMS
providers from 85 universities already registered to attend the 2008
Conference in Philadelphia February 29-March 2nd. To register, visit
the conference Web site (www.ncemsf.org/conf2008), click on the
registration link, and follow the prompts.

If you have registered but not yet paid, please arrange payment
before Saturday to avoid rate increases. If you purchased
registration tokens, please return to the Web site as soon as
possible and assign those tokens to specific attendees.

2) HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS:
Both the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge and the Marriott Fairfield Inn are
essentially filled to capacity (a couple of rooms remain available at
each but they may be obtained only by contacting the hotels
directly). If you have not already reserved lodging for the 2008
Conference in Philadelphia, please contact one of the hotels and
reference the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services
Foundation when booking. Special conference rates are no longer
guaranteed and be aware that you may be referred to a third hotel in
the area if no rooms are available. If the latter occurs or you
experience any difficulty securing conference lodging, please notify
conf2008@... immediately so that we may try our best to assist
you. Please see the Host Facility page on the conference Web site for
further details about the facilities, and hotel contact information
as well as directions.

3) AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION:
Philadelphia International Airport is located just 27 miles from the
conference host facility. Several companies provide shuttle service
from the airport to the host facility. Prices vary and reservations
are strongly encouraged, if not required, in order to secure the best
available rates. Please plan accordingly as mass transit is both
complex and time consuming and a one way taxi ride is expensive,
although comparable if split between four people. Larger groups
especially will benefit by planning in advance as significant savings
can be arranged. For those traveling solo or in small groups,
consider organizing rides with others through Facebook.

Tropiano Transportation (215-616-5370/800-559-2040): $23 one-way/$40
round trip (must book in advance for round trip fares; add $5 for all
credit card purchases; prices include taxes, fuel surcharges and
gratuity). For larger groups, a 10-passenger van is $108.80 one-way
($11 per person). Reference 'NCEMSF' when making reservations.

Other Companies: Eagle Transportation (800-669-5460); King Limousine
(610-265-3050)

For more details as well as driving directions please consult the
Transportation section of the conference Web site. Parking at the
Crowne Plaza and Marriott Fairfield Inn is complimentary.

4) AWARDS PROGRAM:
Awards are available for Collegiate EMS Provider, Collegiate EMS
Advisor, Collegiate EMS Organization, Collegiate EMS Web Site of the
Year as well as Collegiate EMS Video of the Year and Collegiate EMS
Week Event of the Year. There is also the NCEMSF Striving for
Excellence program. All award nominations must be received by
February 22. Consult the conference Web site for further details and
awards submission criteria.

5) MEDTRONIC EMS SKILLS COMPETITION:
All schools in attendance are encouraged to participate in the
Medtronic EMS Skills Competition. Register your BLS and/or ALS team
of four members online before February 27 to ensure your school's
spot in the always fun filled competition. Trophies will be awarded
at our annual awards ceremony Saturday evening to the top performers.

6) POST CONFERENCE DISASTER COURSE - BASIC DISASTER LIFE SUPPORT (BDLS)
NCEMSF is excited to be able to offer the BDLS course as an extension
of our 2008 Conference in Philadelphia. David Jaslow, MD, MPH, FAAEM,
Director of the Division of EMS and Disaster Medicine at Albert
Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and the NAEMT Key Note
Lecturer at the 2008 NCEMSF Conference, will be coordinating the
course that will run Sunday from 8AM to 4PM. The additional cost per
course participant is $50 and includes books, hands-on workshop
materials, and lunch. Space is limited so please pre-register by
February 27, 2008 by supplying your name and university affiliation
online at www.ncemsf.org/phpq/fillsurvey.php?sid=11 . Payment in the
form of cash, check or credit card is do upon conference check-in in
Philadelphia. For more information on the BDLS course please visit
www.ndlsf.org/common/content.asp?PAGE=347 or email conf2008@....

Note: this will be the last email to announce@... prior to the

Dear NCEMSF Supporter,

With 21 days remaining until the 2008 Conference, registration
numbers have already exceeded those of any previous year, making this
year's 15th Anniversary Event the largest gathering of collegiate EMS
providers to date. As such the host facility, The Crowne Plaza Valley
Forge, is essentially filled to capacity (only a very few rooms
remain available and they may be obtained only by contacting the
Crowne Plaza directly). A second hotel block has been opened at
Marriott's Fairfield Inn, located just 100 yards across a shared
parking lot from the Crowne Plaza. In fact, the two hotels share a
fitness center and conference space.

If you have not already reserved lodging for the 2008 Conference in
Philadelphia, please contact The Fairfield Inn directly at
610-337-0700. Please reference the National Collegiate Emergency
Medical Services Foundation when booking to secure the special
conference rate.

If you experience any difficulty securing conference lodging at
either facility, please notify conf2008@... immediately so
that we may assist you. Please see the Host Facility page on the
conference Web site for further details about the facilities, and
hotel contact information as well as directions.

Not yet registered to attend the conference? There is still time!
Regular registration continues through February 23rd, at which point
registration fees will again rise. If you have registered and not yet
paid, please do so as soon as possible to avoid cancellation. If you
have purchased tokens, please return to the conference registration
utility and assign those tokens to specific individuals.

Lastly, a quick program note: on Sunday, March 2, from 8AM to 4PM
there will be an added opportunity to participate in a disaster
management training course. This course will be limited to 25
people, is approved for an additional eight continuing education
credits, and carries with it an additional post conference program
fee that covers the costs of the course textbook and hands-on skills
station materials. If interested please plan your travel accordingly
and stay tuned for further details.

Thank you and see you in a few weeks in Philadelphia.

reduce costs for Conference 2008 attendees flying to Philadelphia,
the NCEMSF Conference Committee is exploring options for travel to
and from Philadelphia International Airport and the host facility,
the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge. Please complete this very short online
survey that will aid in conference transportation planning. http://
www.ncemsf.org/phpq/fillsurvey.php?sid=10

VOMACKA STUDENT SPEAKER COMPETITION: Initially introduced at the 2001
Annual Conference, the Richard W. Vomacka Student Speaker Competition
is named for an NCEMSF mentor who passed away in October 2001. This
symposium is a chance for student lecturers to showcase their
presentation skills and earn bragging rights for their collegiate EMS
organization. The competition is judged on a speaker's ability to
deliver a relevant high-quality seminar to their peers. The deadline
for submissions is February 1st. Three speakers will be selected by
the Conference Committee to present on Saturday morning. Those
selected will be notified by February 8th. Submission specifications
may be found on the conference Web site.

AWARDS PROGRAM / STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE: As always awards are
available for Collegiate EMS Provider, Collegiate EMS Advisor,
Collegiate EMS Organization, and Collegiate EMS Web Site of the Year.
In addition, we have added a Collegiate EMS video contest and a
Collegiate EMS Week prize. In order to be fully considered, all
submissions must be received by February 22nd. Consult the Web for
submission criteria. Remember that to be eligible for any
organizational awards, an organization must be a current dues paying
Institutional Member of NCEMSF. Membership information is also
available on the Web site and through the online conference
registration utility.

EMS SKILLS COMPETITION: The Medtronic EMS Skills Competition will
again take place Friday night. ONE team of four providers per school
may participate in this always fun filled event. If your school has
not previously entered we highly encourage you to do so this year! To
secure your school's spot in the competition pre-register online
prior to February 27th. Schools that have not pre-registered online
prior to the conference may not be permitted to compete. The $10.00
team registration fee is due upon conference check-in in Philadelphia
prior to the start of competition. Trophies will be awarded to the
top finalists.

More information about the conference schedule, fees, skills
competitions, Vomacka Student Speaker Competition and local
attractions is available online and will be updated continuously as
the conference approaches.

Looking forward to greeting you in Philadelphia!

Do you have any policy about responding to students with anaphylactic latex allergies?

Are there standards for stocking providers with latex free equipment?

I have a student with a severe latex allergy and she can become anaphylactic around balloons. Our college is too small to have it’s own EMS, I am searching for information to share with the community ambulance service.

NCEMSF Supporter,

The NCEMSF Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the 15th
Annual National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation
Conference will be held February 29 to March 2, 2008 in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. Campus EMS volunteers from Philadelphia area campus EMS
organizations will help to coordinate this year's milestone event.

The NCEMSF leadership remains committed to providing the most
educational EMS conference anywhere at the greatest value. Help us to
capitalize on the successes of our previous conferences by making this
year's 15th Annual Conference the largest gathering of collegiate EMS
providers to date. Located less than 20 miles from historic Downtown
Philadelphia, two miles from Valley Forge National Historical Park,
site of Washington's troops winter encampment during the Revolutionary
War, and across the street from The King of Prussia Mall, the largest
enclosed retail shopping mall in the United States,
the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge will be this year's conference host
facility. Only a short distance from Philadelphia International
Airport and conveniently located at the junction of the Pennsylvania
Turnpike (I-276/476), the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76), and Routes
202 and 422, the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge is ideally situated.

NCEMSF will have full access to the entire facility for the duration
of the conference weekend. A special nightly conference rate of under
$100.00 (plus applicable taxes) and complimentary parking have been
negotiated. As in past years, conference registration fees will depend
on personal NCEMSF membership status and time of registration
ranging from $60.00 to $95.00 per attendee.

More information, including a complete fee schedule, instructions on
how to register and reserve hotel rooms, detailed travel information,
speakers, and information about special programs such as awards,
skills competition, and scholarship, will be posted on our Web site
shortly. Also, look for updates in the next issue of NCEMSF News,
which will be published and mailed by mid-September.

Interested speakers/program participants may submit a copy of their
resume along with an abstract and/or detailed outline of their
proposed session, being sure to highlight the topic's relevance to
campus based EMS, to conf2008@... or to the fax number below.

Please email conf2008@... with all conference related inquiries.

Membership/Contact Information:
If you have not already done so, please visit the Web site to renew or
begin your personal and institutional memberships and take advantage
of a full year of outstanding benefits (06/01/2007 - 05/31/2008).
Update both your personal and institutional online profiles with your
current telephone number and email address, and, if you moved since
the last academic year, your mailing address as well. Institutions
should make certain that their listed contact person remains involved
and has not recently graduated. Consult the
Web site for the most current list of member benefits, including
cheaper conference registration rates and NCEMSF award eligibility,
and check out the NCEMSF Store as well for discounted prices on
thousands of items from textbooks to apparel.

EMS Week:
Collegiate EMS Week, modeled after National EMS Week sponsored by
Congress and the American College of Emergency Physicians, is
scheduled for November 5-11, 2007. Take advantage of this opportunity
to celebrate campus based EMS together with all other collegiate corps
nationwide. An updated packet filled with new ideas for activities and
publicity will be available online by October 1. Last year's packet
may be accessed until then for those wishing to get an even earlier
start on planning.

Get Involved/Stay connected:
Interested in getting more involved with NCEMSF? There are also always
projects throughout the year with which the Board could use some
assistance. Email secretary@... if interested in contributing.
Also, contact your Regional Coordinator (RC) and resume/initiate
dialog about recent campus events. Submit your group's news for free
online press too.

As always, the entire NCEMSF leadership is available to answer your
questions, help solve your problems, and support your initiatives.
Please contact us and let us know how we can best assist you this
year.

Have a safe start to the new semester and see you in Philadelphia this winter!

Dear NCEMSF Members,

My name is Jacqueline Law. I'm a junior and an EMT-Basic at Vassar
College in Poughkeepsie, NY, and I'm writing to you with a plea for
your help. I am founding an EMS program in an orphanage in Uganda from
scratch, and hope that after reading this message, you will help me by
donating your old supplies at the 2008 NCEMSF conference and possibly,
travel to Uganda and serve with me.

Fulfilling a life-long dream, I am helping to found an orphanage in
Kaberamaido, Uganda, a town in the Northeastern part of the country.
Since the late 1980s, the children of Northern Uganda have been
victimized by a civil war. Between 20,000 and 65,000 children were
abducted and forced to become child soldiers and sex slaves. They have
been abandoned and orphaned and are now fighting AIDs, malaria, open
wounds, malnutrition, and war injuries, just to name a few of their
problems. The orphanage I am helping to found, the Children's Village,
parents 400. Because I am an EMT-Basic, in a paramedic program, and
premed, my focus in the establishment of the orphanage will be
starting the medical facility, beginning with very basic emergency
medical services. Currently there are no supplies – not even the
basics – no Tylenol, Advil, bandages, gauze, tape, dressings,
ice/heating packs, tools, equipment, monitors, medications, nothing.
There are very few nurses, and a doctor only two days a week. Thus, I
will be recruiting and taking with me everything we need, both
materials AND volunteers. I badly need help.

This year when I cleaned out our ambulance with my squad, I realized
that there are often many supplies that EMS units replace, are broken
but still functional, don't use, or just have sitting in their supply
rooms. Just as I have asked my own squad to do, I am asking you to
clean out your supplies and donate anything you are able and willing
to part with.

I will also be taking EMTs from my squad with me to Uganda to serve in
March for a spring break trip. We will most likely work in both the
orphanage and the community, doing rotations similar to the ones
doctors do in hospitals. In addition, I will be going for a week
during October, two-three weeks during January, and the entirety of
the summer 2008. I am looking for volunteers whenever they are able to
come.

I am literally starting completely from scratch, and any and all help
you are willing to provide will save thousands of lives. Please
contact me if you would like more information, are willing to donate
supplies, or are willing to serve with us to the orphanage itself. You
will be helping me provide to these children something they have never
known: LOVE.

Sincerely,
Jacqueline Law

The New Jersey Office of EMS (OEMS) has requested that the information
below be distributed. For those of you who aren't certified in NJ,
please share it will any squad-mates that are from NJ.

----- Forwarded Message Follows -----

The New Jersey Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) will soon
be moving to a web-based Learning Management System (LMS) that will
encompass all New Jersey EMS certifications, as well as all EMT-Basic
courses. Once the LMS is complete, all currently certified New Jersey
EMTs will receive a new EMS certification card that will have a new 6
digit ID number. This ID number will be used for all New Jersey CEU
classes, as well as to log on to the LMS. Individuals will be able to
update their personal information, as well as view their CEU status.
All New Jersey EMS certified personnel must complete a recertification
form within 6 months of their expiration date. This form can be found
on the LMS and should only be submitted once you have completed all
requirements for recertification, and are within six (6) months of
your expiration date.

In an effort to ensure that all currently certified personnel receive
their new cards in a timely matter, OEMS is requesting that all
certified New Jersey EMTs confirm that the address on their New Jersey
EMS certification reflects their current actual mailing address. All
requests for name and address changes must be submitted via fax or
regular mail. A name change requires a copy of your driver's license
or marriage certificate. An address change requires a copy of your
driver's license or a recent utility bill with your name and address
on
the statement.

Also, please see if your name is included on the list of EMS personnel
the state has lost track of. There are hundreds of EMTs and medics
that NJ OEMS has no valid postal address for. they are listed at:

Anyone have a basic and advanced radio trainign program you'd be willing to
share? Ideal

Many Thanks

Hi all.  My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in VT. I can't even imagine what it feels like on campus right now.
Please remember that part of taking care of others is taking care of yourselves.  Keep an eye on your fellow providers, do a stress debriefing, and get help as needed.

Subject: [general-l] Recent Events at Virginia Tech

As most of you are aware, there was a shooting at Virginia Tech (Blacksburg,
Virginia) today that resulted in over 50 people either dead or wounded.  At
this time, 33 people have died including the shooter who took his own life.
This event spread over most of the Monday morning and into the afternoon with
an extensive EMS response from many jurisdictions in Montgomery County, VA.
The Virginia Tech Rescue Squad played a major role in the command and
coordination of the EMS event.

I have been in contact with the VTRS and they have relayed that none of their
personnel were injured in the shootings.  They have been busy and I do not have
the full details of the event, other than that their entire membership was
involved in one way or another in providing care to the Campus Community.  I
have received a few offerings of support and assistance, and those are
appreciated.  I have passed those along to the leadership of the VTRS.  If you,
too, would like to offer assistance or prayers, their organization's email
address is vtrescue@....

Please keep Virginia Tech and the families of those lost today in your prayers.

Medtronic Foundation -- HeartRescue Grants

Through HeartRescue grants, the Medtronic Foundation partners with communities and organizations to initiate or enhance early defibrillation programs to save lives that would otherwise be lost to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). During the past five years, the foundation has partnered with more than 100 communities and organizations around the world and provided them with over $4 million in HeartRescue grants. These groups promote the benefits of early defibrillation and work to train community members on CPR and AED use.

Moving forward, the foundation will work to increase the number of lives saved from SCA by expanding its focus both to prevent SCA and to support patients after an SCA event. Priority will be given to applicants who address one or more methods of intervention in treating SCA:

  • before SCA: education on risk factors and therapy options, including implantation of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator for high-risk patients
  • during SCA: training and awareness programs that are part of community-wide early defibrillation efforts, including CPR and AED training
  • after SCA: support and outreach to survivors of SCA and their families, including information, post-event assessment, local resources, and peer support groups.

Did you get any replies?  I would be interested if you did if you would summarize them and post them here.  I am going to assume that this is not something that is done primarily because of the expense.
