dear nbt,
we gave birth with dr.hakan 6 weeks ago. i wanted to add my story to what dr. hakan wrote but it,s taken me a while, i guess because baby ruya takes up most of my time, also there are so many things i would like to say and share that i wasn,t clear how to start writing.
with my first pregnancy i had no doubt in my mind that i would go to england for the birth and i did. but this time i felt differently. i knew i could go to england if i had to but something was guiding me to look for an answer in turkey. early in my pregnancy i choose from a deck of angel cards, i got the card 'trust' so i did, and i felt my way through the rest of the journey. first we learned of dr.hakan and made contact. i could gage his thinking through watching the group mails and i liked the way that he was encouraging about natural birth and also realistic about the situation in turkey. we went to his course in istanbul and made arrangements to go to marmaris for the birth. we were well looked after i,d like to thank dr.hakan, we,ll always remember it as a special time.
we stayed in dr. hakans village house and it was a lovely place to pass the time while we awaited the arrival of the baby. in preparation we talked over some details about what was possible for the birth. i tried to keep in mind the wholeness of the situation and all of those involved. we briefly considered a home birth but hakan was concerned that in an emergency the village house was too far so we agreed that the easiest thing would be to be in the hospital. home births are of course lovely but i don,t have anything against hospitals so it is possible to feel relaxed in a hospital if you feel secure and trust the people your with.
my labour started early in the morning just as we woke. it was a great labour, the contractions were really efficient and it was a beautiful day so i was walking around the garden breathing in the view of the mountains with each contraction. i chose instinctively when to make the trip to the hospital and when i got there i was already 8cm dilated. i had 2 midwives, erkan and dr.hakan encourage me through the delivery. there was a little surrender on everyones part and together we made a great delivery, i surrendered to the advice of the dr and the midwives, dr surrendered to the inconvenience of my birth position and the midwives did as we requested by not cutting the cord too soon or washing the baby. it was actually very nice to stay in the hospital over night and to be cared for whilst we rested and bonded, also it is our choice to wait a bit before we start to vaccinate and surprisingly the dr. on duty accepted this with out giving us any problems.
So it is possible to have a good birthing experience in turkey, maybe you don,t get every detail on your list but if you can think more holistically then its definitely possible. conscious women birthing in turkey today have a roll to play in changing things, by working together with the dr.s who are willing we can all learn by experience. the delivery rooms in hospitals are not really set up for a natural birth, we need mats, cushions, birthing balls, things lean on, i.e chairs, curtains for the windows but this will come for future women and babies from our experiences. this is the wholeness of the experience, and if the light was a bit bright on a sunny day and the room was a medical looking hospital room rather than my bedroom at home i still had a great birthing experience. i was supported through a natural and well managed virginal birth by patient medical professionals and i received my baby immediately for bonding. i am pleased to have contributed in some small way to the natural birth revolution in turkey and i,m sure Ruya will be too.
on a health note, this time i drank red raspberry leaf tea from about 5 months (not yet found in turkey you need to get a friend in europe to send it) but it really worked wonders. i had such a good labour that i didn,t have a transitional stage. it was a 7 hour labour from start to finish (its my second birth) but i was totally clear headed and when it came to pushing i could really take it easy and push out gently, it was wonderful to feel so positive even in the most difficult stage and have enough strength to be disciplined in pushing.
much love, light and love to all conscious birthing women t x
