RE: [naturalbirthturkey] Re: Article about c-sections

Hos geldiniz, Esra!  Ask any questions thatyou want and don't worry about the language.  There are enough here who speak both English and Turkish that language shouldn't be a problem at all.  Thanks for helping to normalize birth through midwifery.  Where are you located?

Kate

Hello I'm graduated midwife.and I'm looking your mails. You are wonderful. and I want to say thank you, to the Dr.Hakan Coker.

Why sectio??? ıt's simple because of the money. in turkey if you want to sectio dr will pay good money from this and sectio is 1 or 2 hours for them . if you want to normal birth ,without istanbul or bursa. mostly you wil be atended by midwivevs and dr won't pay from this or if you want to be attended by dr, dr should be near 8 our 9 hours!!!! but if dr want's he or she go at least 3 or 4 sectio think the moneys!!!!!!!! at least money is the most important for the all people in turkey like all world.

but the  birth is very very special and important thing all womens life.and birt must be very very kindly.there must be dr or midwife. women that who want to be see near and if there is no problem, womens bırth must be where she want. own home or friend 's home.(but if there is no problem for the women's health)

I'm sory for my englısh. lot of time I want to write to your questions. But I afraid to say wrong thing.

good luck for all of you!

Esra Çömezoğlu Duman

I totally agree with Elizabeth about Dr. Coker.  If only we could install him instantly into the Health Ministry!  But it's not just the doctors and health workers that need to be educated about the dangers of surgical birth--mothers need to know the risks as well.  Doctors really downplay the risks of surgical birth, emphasizing that the mother won't have to go through labor and discounting any benefits that labor has to offer both mother and baby.  The bad thing about a surgical birth is that you are recovering from two life-altering events at the same time, doubling the difficulties of each.  It's hard enough to cope with a new baby *or* recovery from major abdominal surgery, but to combine the two when it's not necessary is ludicrous.  Birth is something that a woman does, not something that is done to her.  It is an important rite of passage that shouldn't be usurped.

Vicky, take Elizabeth up on the pool.  Trust me.  I labored 80 hours before Ahmet was born via surgery and I couldn't have done it without that pool--it saved my sanity.  It's easy to set up, easy to take down, and deep enough to provide some real relief.

Good luck!  And remember that birth is an emergence not an emergency!

Kate

Hakan - why can't more Turkish doctors think like you?  Thank you for sharing your feelings about birth - it is a "miraculously normal" event!  You know, with Turkey's wonderful commitment to breastfeeding, if they could just understand birth they'd be an amazing country, "birthly" speaking!

Vicky - I'm so glad that you're glad!  Well, we could talk to Fatma about it... I still have the birth pool in my closet!  She knows how it turned out for me, maybe she would be curious; if it would help, I could try my best to be there to help both of you.
TGIF,
Elizabeth
